AR15/M4 handgrip question?

What do you mean by "handgrip"?

Do you mean the pistol grip, the forearm, or the carrying handle?

If you mean "carrying handle", the item that holds the rear sight: if you plan to get into optics, get the A3 upper with detachable carry handle. If you don't plan to use optics, and want the rifle for self-defense or "tactical" competition, get A1 sights. If you plan to use the rifle for static competition (High Power, etc), and don't want optics, get the A2 sights.

Does that cover you? Let me know if you meant something different.

i was thinking of getting one of the red dot style sights..but they will fit on either style handle right?

There are mounts to fit certain types of red dots to fixed handles, or you can affix them to the rail on an A3/A4 flattop upper.

Caution: good optics aren't cheap, and cheap optics aren't good. The cheapest "dot" sight that I've heard reliable good things about is the Armson OEG, and that's $135.

If you think you might get a red-dot or holographic type sight, get an AR-15 w/ the flattop upper, and put iron sights on it for the time being, until you get a chance to save up and pick a good optic.

Just my .02

I find that any sights mounted on top of the carry handle are too high for me to get a good cheek weld. YMMV

You can always add A1 or A2 sights to a flattop. You can't flattop a fixed carry handle though

exactly what he said.
The flattop gives you way more options, the fixed (A2 style) only gives you one option.
Go for a flattop

shooter71,
I suggest you getting the flattop model. the first ar i had didn't have the removable carry handle, and that was the first thing i wanted to change. so i did. i sold it and bought an a3 model, and I am even more happy with it than i thought i would be. if you want to put red dots on there, it is good to have the flattop, but if you are one of those anti-red dot types, and you are shooting with iron sights only then the a2 model might be best for you , but The a3 will definetly allow you to do more with the sight systems avaliable, and perfect for a scope. good luck!

This seems to be one of the better options out there on A3 uppers currently. Folks have these for around $450 with the chrome-lined barrel:

Pic from www.eaglefirearms.net ($439), but they're out of stock currently.

So far as AR-15 optics, you've got a few busy hours with the search engine ahead of you. Any have suggestions what keywords he should enter to find all the good AR optics threads?

BINGO!! thats why i was asking about the removeable handle for the versatility aspect..if the sight is too high i can just take the handle off or just use the stock sights ..if i got the fixed handle id have to deal with the optic sight possibley being too high or be unhappy with it or/and end up getting a new rifle and that would so suck

Get the A3 flattop, but... Make sure you get the optics high enough to clear the front sight. Mounting some red dot scopes to the flattop will be too low or the front sight will obsure your view. Here is a guide with some options and more info. Murphy's law says that a cowitnessed sight is a good thing if you plan to use the rifle for self defense or serious hunting.
