I am in the process of building my own AR15. I have already built the "lower" receiver, (Aero Precision). I know that this might not be of the highest quality, but once I get the whole weapon built I can always upgrade.

So my question is. . .What "upper receiver" should I invest in.?.

As I've stated, I have a lower that I will upgrade, if necessary. I just want my AR to function, it need not be a Wilson Combat. . .Just one that is reliable.:)

Ive had good results with my 20 " Hbar chrome moly DPMS. I wouldnt recommend a chrome lined one if you want accuracy or a carbine for distance. just my two cents and experience.

Some like the aftermarket non GI ones, i just like the reg GI rifle myself reason i chose the Hbar, to each his own though.

how do you like that aero lower? I was looking at ads for those earlier but never held one

I bought a Tactical Machining upper for my first and it's been great. They went up on their pricing though...

I like the BCM stuff too, but I don't think that there's anything wrong with just going with an Aero upper as well. From what I remember they are cheap.

BTW, are you talking about a complete upper or building one? If you are just going to buy a complete upper and are looking for bang for the buck, I'd look at something from Bravo Company or Spike's Tactical.

As for form, I'd stick to a carbine length barrel and stay away from HBars. HBars are unnecessarily heavy and really don't make the rifle any more accurate. Assuming that you don't want to mess with NFA paper work, I'd go with either a 14.5" barrel with a carbine length gas system and a pinned flash hider or a 16" barrel with a mid length gas system. I like the 14.5" better, due to handling characteristics, but having the pinned flash hider can be a pain when you want to upgrade something. I'd say that the 16" barrel is probably the more popular.

so many to choose from, i did my research and decided on gettin a complete upper from sabre defence. its a competition deluxe the way they put this upper together is top notch and the stainless fluted barrel is a work of art.

Seems like good quality to me, I put it together last night (actually my neighbor put it together, and I watched). Anyway, for $175.00 it seems like a good lower.

Hope that helps.

Bravo Company has Stag carbine uppers for $530 with bolt, bolt carrier, charge handle, chrome lined 1/9, and MI ERS. I was planning on getting a Del-Ton kit for my first build, but after searching Bravo Co's site, I'm sold on their stuff. Seems like great quality at a good price.

Bravo Company or Spikes. Spikes if you want high quality at a cheap price. BCM if you want absolute-top-of-the-industry quality for only a little more, and more options to choose from.

Another vote for BCM. I love my 14.5 middy w/ pinned FSC556. If money is tight, dont dismiss Del-Ton. For 2/3 of the price of my BCM upper, my Del-ton upper is GTG, especially if the rifle will be a range toy.

Another one for Bravo Company or Daniel Defense. As far as CMMG; their materials aren't at the same level as BCM or DD, and word is that they're QC has slipped from what it was.

If you just want the receiver, any upper receiver from a company with a good reputation will be of good quality but may not fit well on your lower receiver. I would try a few in person, it you can, and see what fits well. I would also be more concerned about the barrel, bolt carrier group, trigger, buffer weight, and sights than the upper receiver.

I have a Tactical Machining lower with a Yankee Hill upper that fits perfectly together. There is no play between the receivers and the rear pin comes out easily by hand. I Also have a Spikes lower and upper that fits so tight I can only get the rear pin in 3/4 of the way by hand. I also have a Diemaco (Canadian Colt) upper receiver that fits loose on either of my rifles.

I have already built the "lower" receiver, (Aero Precision). I know that this might not be of the highest quality, but once I get the whole weapon built I can always upgrade.

Nonsense! If your Aero lower is like mine and the 49 others that came with it in a group buy, it's a top quality piece! Aero ranks close to the top on my personal quality "chart."
