people will figure out how to reload them? This guy has an interesting video where he reloaded a 22LR using wax as the bullet, and toy caps as the primer media.

All you need to add is lead bullets that will fit and some dies. At 12-15 cents it's still too cheap, but when I look on gunbot and ammoseek I see prices reaching the 30 cents a bullet range, innovation may start kicking in.

I'm sure a lot more people would consider reloading if it really came down to it. I don't have the tools or the time to take the project on myself.

I just (not so secretly) wish people would stop hoarding and stuffing ammo in their basement if we ever want the supply to ever catch up to what it once was. Yes, sure, we all want ammo 'for those tough times' but I'm seeing stories of people with over 20,000 rounds of 22, and they only own ONE or maybe TWO 22LR firearms. The math says they will wear their firearm out before they put a dent in their ammo supply.....

The folks online selling the stuff are the one's capitalizing on a strained market, and it's only gouging if you actually BUY from them.

I'll wait for someone who has the time to develop and sell the tools :). In the meantime I've retired one of my 22's, and the wife's Mark I isn't far behind. Especially when we can shoot our other guns for 15 cents a bullet. Reading up on how hard rimfires are to manufacturer, I'm amazing they're still around.

I have a few thousand rounds rat holed, I dont shoot them any more I have went to my Hornet instead, I can reload it. 22 amo is near imposible to find here, The local wall mart here hasnt had a box for me in a year and a half. Last I found was to city on a Dr. visit i got 5 boxes of CCI . A few years ago I would have been out of amo by now, fortunatly I reload and cast for my hornet.

When peoples closets finally become glutted with product, and millions of duplicate orders get canceled,, the price and availability will be back.

There are millions of new shooters, mixed with a bi of panic, but manufacturing capacity will catch up one of these days.

I do not see myself ever reloading .22 LR.

10-12 years ago I found a particular lot of ammo that was exceptionally accurate and picked up all I could find (about 25,000 round), it cost around $7.98/550. "Hording" never once entered my mind.

20,000 rounds is nothing, especially in .22lr. I have center fire guns I use in competition that see more rounds than that in a single year.

Supply and demand. The sad part is that no one is starting up new business to fill the supply part of the equation. This leads me to think even after everyone has plenty the prices won't be going all the way back down.

Kind of like gas prices. They have to sit on oil reserves, store it on their ships and refine it in the US and then ship it elsewhere to keep the price we pay at the pump up as high as they are.

Actually, people are starting to realize that if you cast your own bullets, you can reload centerfire ammo for the price of rimfire ammo.

Don

22lr being hard to find has meant more centerfire (reloads) for my kids. The 22 is reserved for my 4yo, everybody else is shooting .223 and 6.5. The only way I would ever consider reloading rf would be if it was no longer manufactured.

During a normal year, going through 20,000 rounds of .22LR is no problem at all. That's hardly hoarding.

This.
Its already starting in some areas. Just the other day I picked up 5 boxes of 50 at the local Bass Pro for $2.29 each. That's less than a nickle a round.

I agree, having 20,000+ rounds of any ammo type, with the intent to use it IS NOT hoarding. Even if the purchase were made with the slightest notion of possibly using it one day. But I think we all know there are some folks who are buying it with no real plan to use it. Those same folks probably already have a decent amount of ammo for the amount they use in their given lifetime, let alone a year.....

Maybe that's just it. Some folks are planning on including their ammo reserves in their Will to be handed down to their kids. I don't have kids, or a huge stockpile of 22LR so maybe that's why I'm bitter

This is probably not the target crowd for that statement. 20,000 was just an arbitrary number. Without falling down the rabbit hole of "prepping" it just irks me a little when folks routinely stalk the gun porn counters and hork up all the ammo before those of us that actually SHOOT IT get a chance to buy it at reasonable prices.

His other videos about making primers has really piqued my interests.

Would go great with my free casted bullets.

Now if I can make some black powder I can make a truly free 45ACP...

Bullet? Free.
Case? Free.
Primer? 1$/2500 (aka free)
Powder? Eh. Its easy enough to make if I wanted to.

when I am in the right place at the right time I can get 22lr's for $22.00 a brick or $2.19 a box of 50, so I buy them and give them to the guy's with young kid's to take out and shoot. but I know that there are people out there buying all they can find and selling them for double the cost and others are happy to pay this inflated price. as I look at it $50.00 a brick is way out of line for 22lr's. but as long as people keep paying that much pretty soon that will be the norm......
