i am looking at a lancaster arms red russian ak-47 and i wanted to know if they were any good or if they were quality rifles before i made the purchase. have you heard good things about them or bad things?

would you happen to know what the recall is for? i heard there ak-74's had some major issues but i haven't been able to find anything about their ak-47's.

If you search here on THR for "Lancaster" you'll find a few threads on the first page of results that discuss some issues. Some of the issues would be -74 specific, some not.

They are going through a recall, now. That means that they've acknowledged a problem and are taking steps to fix it.

They have replaced a number of rifles for members here -- even before/outside of the recall.

They have developed a reputation for being a bit difficult for the average consumer to work with from a customer-service perspective, but if your dealer is willing to act as your advocate that seems to help the situation get rectified sooner.

Atlantic Firearms has really gone to bat for some members here (whose stories you'll read in the threads I mentioned) and gotten problems fixed.

If they're willing to still sell Lancaster products after the issues, I'd trust their opinion. But I might call them, explain my wants and budget, and ask for their candid recommendation...

adamjaw , if you email over your contact info we will give a call on monday and can give you the honest low down on any of the AK rifles and try to find hte one that best fits your needs.

^ Atlantic is good people. Blane was extremely helpful when I was having issues with my TGI AMD-65. I would buy from them again and have recommended them to family.

I got a Romy G model in Russian Red direct from Lancaster about 5 years ago, back when they were still $499 :D . Turned out they forgot to include the cleaning rod, so while having a few beverages with my bro
(who had just pointed out the missing rod) I called Lancaster.
As I recall, it was Mike Barnes that answered the phone. I explained the issue, and he asked me to call him back in 20 minutes. When I called back he said he went back and dug me up a new cleaning rod, plus a sight adjustment tool, oiler bottle, a sling, and maybe something else, I forget. Then he shiiped it to me,pronto, and on their dime.;)
My rifle has impecable fit and finish, and was dead-on accurate right out of the box, and it has long been one of my rifles I'd happily grab in an emergency.
I've read some of the problems over the years, but Lancaster has done right by me, and I say so every time one of these threads pops up.

I got a Lancaster AK-47. Beautiful rifle, had one problem with it. The lug on the gas break that serves as a guide for the cleaning rod and probably comes into play to attach a bayonet broke clean off. I called them after it happened and they said to ship it back. I don't trust those SOBs. I, along with countless others, have had far too many problems dealing with the constant lies of Chet Durda and Mike. No way would I ship my gun back for some minor problem. Would I buy another Lancaster rifle? Yes, if the price is right. But I would NEVER purchase anything of significant value through them. Go through a dealer who has what you want on hand and you'll be happy.
