are long barreled 22 lrs quieter than shorter ones

assuming bolt action or break are 21 inch or more quieter than 16-18 inch barrels or is it the fact that the muzzle is further away from the shooters ear. To me it sounds alot quieter than the shorter barrels and btw 22 lr is what im talking about

Try standard velocity ammo if you want quiet. Yes, long barrels seem to be more quiet.

Yes, but a lot depends on where you are standing. It makes a more noticeable difference to the shooter since the noise is farther from your ears than to bystanders who may be standing off to the side on a firing line.

The bore pressure is less the further you get from the chamber where the powder burns and makes the most pressure.

When the bullet exits the muzzle, it's like un-corking a champagne bottle.

SO the less pressure in the bottle when you un-cork it, the less pop you get.
Or the longer the barrel is, the less pop you get.
Because the pressure is lower.

I can fire my Savage TRR SR .22 target rifle with CCI Stingers and it's pretty quiet with plugs in. Shooting CCI Stingers from my Beretta Bobcat with plugs is as loud as my M9.

today while shooting i had to go back to the car and get something, we hiked into a spot to shoot, and were shooting steel targets. when at the car i could only hear the bullets hitting targets. and that was a savage TR with CCI SV

I realize by the OP's wording that he was asking about rifle length barrels.

But I had been led to understand on the other end of the spectrum (in pistols or very S-BRs) that keeping a 22LR barrel under 5" kept most ammo subsonic, not allowing it time to build pressure and speed. So on that other end of things would you say a very short barrel is quieter?

It's quieter in terms of supersonic crack, but much louder in terms of powder flash noise. So, in a practical sense, a shorter barrel would be much louder.

I'm not going to get into the theory, but my CZ 452 "trainer" is MUCH quieter than a 10/22 carbine with the same ammo. I think there is about an 8 inch difference in barrel length between the two. Shooting subsonics out of the CZ is about as loud as a decent pellet gun.

I don't know if that comparison would be apples to apples. The semi-auto 10/22 would create a little more noise from the action cycling.

A CB out of a rifle is no louder than a pellet gun. The same round out of a pistol sounds about like a .22 short out of a rifle.

I would have to say yes, ruger 22 carbine vs springfield. The ruger was alot louder. Look at a 22 pistol vs rifle and that proves it. I noticed that a colt lightning pump action 45lc has pretty much no noise and a 45lc revolver is pretty loud

In a .22 LR, the powder is consumed in 14 ~ 18 inches. after that, the pressure is decreasing. Therefore, if the barrel is but 15" long, the pressure being vented is at or near its maximum, thus resulting in a louder "Bang".
The longer the barrel, the lower the pressure is when the bullet exits the barrel.
Further; subsonic ammunition (less than 1100 fps) will not have the supersonic "Crack" and will be perceived as being less noisy.
Subsonic ammunition is generally more accurate at ranges over 75 ~ 100 yds because it does not destabilise as it transitions the sound barrior.

I was shooting a mix of long rifle and shorts from my Springfield which has a 24 inch barrel. The shorts sound like a dud. I had to stop and check the bore for the first two as I could not believe the bullet cleared the barrel.
