Are you a pilot? Planes and Guns

I'm technically a liscensed pilot (PPL-ASEL) but I haven't been up in a few years. It's an expensive hobby. I may try to take it up again when finances allow.

Agreed! Planes and guns both...though planes take the cake on that

Are you posting a poll on an aviation site to get the info and the correlating it to THR since the pilots that are here are gun enthusiasts you'd want to correlate to a population of pilots that might be gun enthusiasts from a flight site.
Great idea! I need to--any suggestion on forums?

Private Pilot SEL, VFR, not current, less than 100 hours as PIC. I have flown left and right seat on a number of aircraft (not logged) since I was involved in sport parachuting for over 40 years. WAY more takeoffs than landings (in aircraft). I have 1 1/2 hours left seat in a Beech D-18.

Nearly everyone in aviation that I encountered were gun owners or shooters with a few exceptions. Nancy (co-owner of the last drop zone I worked for) did not like guns and didn't want to have anything to do with them.

I once worked with a technician that had a job back in the day shooting coyotes with a lever action from a C-150 with the door and right seat removed. He strapped himself in and shot down and parallel to the wing (like the gunships in Vietnam).

I've been gunowner/shooter/hunter since early 1960s.

USAF fighter pilot, F-4C/D/E/G, F-5E. ATP single engine land and multi engine land. Almost all my colleagues who fly (or flew) are gun enthusiasts.

As an aircraft owner for the past 15 years, I have to say that is the biggest understatement I have seen on the internet in a while. :)

Suddenly that whole quote about "how to make a small fortune in aviation" comes to mind!

That is a 20mm cannon in the wing root, and yes it makes a lot of noise.
Learned the trade in Uncle Sugars trade schools. Dropping bombs is a lot like shooting, you have to get out the ballistics table and set your sights.

F-4, A-4, 747, 757, 767, MD-11. Lifetime shooter and 30 plus years flying.

BE1900, MD80 and A320 here. Friends and acquaintances call me the "gun guy." Didn't do the FFDO program because they wouldn't let me carry my 1911 :)

Private pilot, SEL, plus an engineer graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. About 350 hours...not counting 550 hours of UAV time.

As for shooting, the signature says all that's needed.

^^ USNTPS? What class?

I've been teaching there since Class 117. Actually started with 114 but have flown with every class since 117. Think MiG.

MD, UAV's... Webster? Come say hi sometime.

Private pilot over 40 years, SEL, own and fly an experimental light sport ultralight type single-seat fixed wing. Been around guns since I was a little kid. In my 70s now.

I wanted to take a second and thank you all for posting! Got some excellent info (and really cool pics) as well as great advice. If there are any more pilots out there, don't hestiate to let us know!

You have a mixed terms there. Is it an ultralight, an E-LSA, or an EAB that is LSA compliant? :)

Jim
It is currently flying as Experimental Light Sport. Previously it was an ultralight. Several years ago the FAA, for a short time, allowed those that had become "fat" [overweight] to be n-numbered and certificated with no questions asked. It did have to pass the FAA inspection, etc. For that reason I refer to it as "ultralight-type".

Aaahhh! One of the few! There was a bunch of confusion about that. The 2010 deadline caught some people flat footed. They now have machines that look like airplanes that are now no longer legal to take flight. Glad to hear you made the switch.

Ex Army pilot from RVN era. Certified instructor in UH-1's and SIP in Oh-58's. About 4000 hours total with over 2000 combat hours. In the Huey's we carried Model 10 .38's per Cav TOE. In Kiowa's I carried a Python, a cut M2 carbine and an M-79. Don't shoot enough.

And thank you for your service.

DHC-8, BAe-146, CL-65, EMB-175, 737, & 717 here. Like most pilots I know, I like my toys to be mechanical and challenging. Guns, cars, motorcycles, RC and boats.
