I was going through the "how close is your HD gun right now?" thread in the strategies section and it got me thinking. i regularly sit on my couch with my gun next to me or on me....just like most of you. Do your friends, family, coworkers, or whoever knows you own firearms think you are paranoid? Do they think you are prepared for something that wont ever happen to you?

I have a firearm in the nightstand loaded, one in the kitchen, one in the garage stashed, and one on my body. All of them are loaded ready to go to work if need be. My family and people who know I own guns, but dont know where they are, think I am way to paranoid..personally? I think I am prepared.

You?

Joe

I too have the feeling of "It's better to have it and not need it; thant to need it and not have it." I've never really considered myself paranoid, it's more like "prepared". And with global terrorism, Radical left-wing extremism, common everyday thugs, and the government slowly diminishing our freedoms, I'd say anyone who doesn't carry a gun is naive and unaware of the possibly circumstances in which they could face at any moment. The Government's worst enemy is the armed citizen. DON'T TREAD ON ME.

Clinically paranoid? No, not really. In the practical sense where I don't trust very many people and keep a loaded weapon within arms reach at all times (aside from in the shower) though, yeah I'm paranoid. If I'm awake late on a saturday evening/sunday morning (depending on your point of view) I'll hear a loud thud on my front porch. Now this happens every week and it's the sunday paper landing on my porch. I know this. But my initial thought is to grab my pistol. And about 10 seconds later I realize it's the damned paper.

I carry when I can but more often then now I am either on Fire/EMS or working so I do not carry often... but I too live in Maine and it is a calculated risk. I also ride my motorcycle without a helmet, run with scissors and often do not chew my food nearly what the "man" says I should.

Now, in the home... I have three guns one in my nightstand that goes from the car - nightstand - car, etc... one in the bathroom (Read my coyote posting in S&T) and one in a box in the living room closet. I feel as though I am more likely to need to defend myself at home. Not because I live in a bad neighborhood, just because it seems that is the place where you are most likely to be attacked be 4 or 2 legged creatures looking to do you harm and rob you. No one carries cash anymore, so why mug someone?

Nope. Not paranoid. 99% of the time I have a gun within 2' of my body, but I'm almost never thinking about terrible things happening to me or my loved ones. To be paranoid, I figure one would have to regularly, and irrationally, think about and fear terrible happenings. I certainly don't do that. I am ready if something did happen though.

If anything, I think guns keep people from being paranoid. I know I generally feel pretty safe with a gun on me.

As far as my friends (the ones who know about my guns), they don't think anything about it. I don't think it moves them one way or the other.

According to more than one licensed professional and the DSM-IV, definitely not. But I am "prepared". :D

If you lived in my neighborhood.....I'd say you're a bit paranoid, If you live in a high crime area, sounds like you're a person prepared.

We all have our fears, whether it's our safety, finances, or health. Howard Hughes was an example of an obsessive compulsive personality who went further than the norm on many levels.

Neighbor Lady grew up during the great depression......she was obsessed with hording food and stashing coins away (just in case the banks should fail). One could say she was prepared for the worst.....others thought she was paranoid.

What is it they always say?

It is not paranoia, it is preperation.

Kind of goes along the lines of:

It is not the odds, it is the stakes.

...

Exactly..

It has taken my wife just under 3yrs to finally understand that, as she always would say - you're too paranoid and I would say - without any German Shepherds in my/our life, the guns (shotguns) and the newer small herd of pistols of the last 3 yrs wasn't a paranoid movement but an on-going strategy in "vigilance.. "

Which she now understands,

I wear sunscreen when outside, always buckle up in the car, head in from fishing at the first sign of lightning, and almost always have a firearm within arms reach. I dont' think bad things are going to happen to me, but if they do I want to limit the "bad" that happens. Its a matter of personal safety not a result of being paranoid.

Personally, where I live, it is not necessary to have a gun in every room and one on your person - sounds like you need to find a nicer neighborhood.

Bad things can happen in wonderful neighborhoods as well. If I were a criminal I wouldn't target poor people in poor neighborhoods, and I don't believe they do either.

I view a loaded firearm like a fire extinguisher. Hope you never need it, but if you do, there it is.

I always have people ask me "why do you have a gun?" The first thing out of my mouth is "Why DON'T you have a gun?" I wasn't aware that the 2nd Amendment was a joke that I wasn't let in on. Did you guys get the memo? Because i did't know it was just a gag and i wasn't actually suppose to have a gun. man, I must look like a fool carrying around a gun. Well, i guess I'll have to sit in the corner with a dunce cap now.

For a real eye opener check out the monthly crime stats for your neighborhood oneounceload. I bet your eyes will pop out when you see the number of burglaries, break ins, etc in YOUR neighborhood. Not to mention registered sex offenders and the like.

The last city I lived in---I had a gun in every room including the garage.
Now-----------I just carry one on me...........................:)
I'm not paranoid---------I just don't trust people!!!!!!!!!!!!!-------:uhoh::uhoh:

I like to think of myself as prepared not paranoid. I could care less if someone thinks I'm paranoid. At least I'll be as prepared as possible if something were to happen. How will they fare?

Hey DocROB, be sure and check that extinguisher daily to ensure it hasn't been discharged. Know what I mean????

Paranoid?

Who's asking?
Why are you really asking?
Who else will have this information?
What is this question really about?
Who do you work for?
Is this a trick question?

LOL. Just kidding on the above.

I do not have a gun on me or around me because I THINK something is going to happen. I have them IN CASE something happens.

I think that is the difference between being paranoid and prepared.
