Are you Paranoid?

paranoid in the context most anti gunners use more or less means "You are taking precautionary measures that I cannot understand, so it must be wrong, as I feel myself as the standard of reasonable peope and I wouldn't do it."

Sadly they fail to realize the coin reads the same on our side too....everyone thinks their right. True paranoia is when you look for things around every corner without reason to....preparedness for disaster is not looking for things around every corner, it's being sure that when something actually comes screaming around that corner, you have the time to react instead of sitting there with your jaw dropped.

We Floridians do the same thing, it's called "Hurricane preparedness"......5 years and I've had no need to use my supplies, but I am NOT going to get rid of my 2-week food supply (my req. is 10-year shelf life with no refrigeration or better) anytime soon as it may save me and my loved one's hides one day. I spare no expense in hurricane preparedness, but nobody blinks an eye about that.

I'm not paranoid.
Why do you need to know where my guns are?
All you need to know is that I have one close by and will use it if need be.

Firearm = claws on a cat.. Glad they're there, nothing the cat wants to do to get rid of em... surgical processes involved, time, pain, etc.

Naw, you're prepared. My neighbor thought I was nuts because I also own a bear gun, than I asked him. In the 25 years you moved into this neighbnorhood, have you ever seen a bear, he replied no... I replied YOUR WELCOME.

If I were really paranoid, would I know I was paranoid? And if I knew I was paranoid, wouldn't I be paranoid about admitting I was?

I'm not paranoid, I think, I just like weapons in all their various forms. The more I know people the more I like my guns.:scrutiny:

To me, I rationalize it with a simple equation.

1. What does it cost/risk me to carry a loaded, drop-safe firearm, on my person?
There is a cost, I cannot go into some businesses, building, etc. I have to deal with potential complication in interactions with law enforcement, to a lesser degree the perception of others (though most have no idea I am carrying and I could care less what they think about it).

2. What is the cost/risk of not doing it?
Leaves me unable to defend myself from a spectrum of threats.

The risk of being attacked is low, the risk posed by carrying is lower. Whether folks want to call me paranoid, does not concern me. Humans are selfish and self centered. Many folks demean those who think differently than they do. I would be dishonest if I said I never was guilty of that.

Depends upon the environment. In a combat zone troops carry their weapons with them all the time and never allow them to get out of arm's reach. When in safe areas where security is provided by others they don't need this level of preparedness. When on leave away from heightened security risk areas they may not even have access to them.

If you live in a reasonably low crime area you may be thought of as "paranoid" if you have loaded guns stashed about your house or constantly carry while at home. If you live in an area with higher than average violent crime rates it may be prudent to do have a loaded firearm close enough to reach. How close depends upon how violent the neighborhood.

hmmm...

In high school, I was attacked and chased by a gang, that frequently shot at me, even blowing out the back window of my car in front of a theater with a 12 ga. I obtained a gun and carried it to school for 6 months. Long story, but I lived looking over my shoulder for several years.

Working for the Govt. I busted a Mexican gang with a truck load of M.J., they had a great lawyer and got out...I got death threats. Not much fun when bad guys shoot up your house one night. We moved several times.

In and out of various situations where people wanted my life or threatened my family over the years.

Recently, drug-addict ex-son in law was recently released from prison and has made my daughter's and my life HELL. Threatening to kidnap the kids, stole a suburban, kicked in the door, stole TV, Computer, X-box and my grandson's .22's and hocked them for drugs.

He has threatened to burn my house, slash my tires and kill me and my daughter.

We rebuilt the door frame and put on good locks, he could not get in the other night, daughter called the sheriff at midnight, deputy showed up at 6 AM AND CHEWED MY DAUGHTER OUT FOR CALLING THEM.

When seconds count, police are only hours away!

You ain't paranoid if the threat is real.

I have guns close and in every vehicle.

No kidding right?
Next thing we know we'll be reading Miranda rights to terr....Oh, nvm.

Just where I'm sitting right now I have a Winny 94 behind the door and a .38 stuck next to me.
I have at least 2 guns sitting in my car (primary and backup).

Seems like cheap insurance for my butt.

We lived in a "less-than-desirable" neighborhood for nearly 21 years. Gangs, drive-bys, etc. We never had a problem. Because of small children in our home, we didn't have any firearms (wife's request). We moved to a much nicer neighborhood two years ago and my son was assaulted, our house was broken into and my wife was accosted in a nearby Wal-Mart parking lot, all within the first six months. We now have guns and everyone in our family knows how to use them. Most of the guns are locked up, but there is always at least one ready for action and close to hand. I work at home so I have the luxury of being able to OC on the job.

It's a very subjective question. Having a weapon vs not having one. It would stand to reason the person with the weapon is more paranoid than the person who doesn't feel they need one.

But could be equally delusional living in his/her nice safe fantasy, never never land. So less paranoid does not equal less dilusional.

Really? So I have a fire extinguisher in my kitchen. I know that my neighbor does not. Am I paranoid?

Yeah, just stop wearing that seat belt you paranoid freak.

If you're wearing a motorcycle helmet when you ride, you're just a frightened lunatic.

A firearm is simply a piece of emergency equipment just like a fire extinguisher.
I keep one in my vehicle and one mounted on the wall in a central location of both floors of my home. I can get to one within seconds if a fire starts. I also keep a loaded shotgun downstairs in a centtral location and one by my bed and there is a loaded handgun in my vehicle. I could say the same about flashlights or smoke detectors.

plus a bunch on HSO's post

threat assessment

it is wrong for somebody else to tell you what yours is
it is wrong for you to tell others what theirs should be
and that really is a big part of what RKBA is really about

long as you don't start shooting at me or mine absent legit reason to do so
you are ok in my book

I don't feel that I have to justify the way I think or the way I live my life to anyone.

And I don't.

I don't care what most people think.

I alone are responsible for my life and for the consequences of my choices.

Let's see... I keep a spare in my truck and carry two spares when I'm in the backcountry. Misc tools, belts, fluids, rossi single shot (.22lr and .410 barrels) with 50 rounds of .22 and 30 rounds of .410 (20 #7 shot, 5 #4 shot and 5 000 buck) also a good first aid kit, toilet paper, matches, flint stone, 4 garbage bags (they double as ponchos in a pinch), big thick blanket, water purification tablets, 3 MRE's and 5 gallons of water. And the manditory roll of duct tape, a roll of bailing wire and fire extinguisher.

At home I keep two more fire extinguishers, one in the kitchen and one in my loading/gun room. The wife and I have emergency supply of canned goods, beans, rice, 30 pounds (roughly) of ice and 30 gallons of water that we keep as a rotating stockpile.

We also keep a 500-1000 round supply of all centerfire cartridges we use and 2500-5000 rounds of .22. We have lots of camping supplies that could come in handy in SHTF situation and several bottles of water purification tablets and a hand pump filter.

I carry a handgun at all times. Normally a S&W 637 but depending on where I'm going I have carried as small as a NAA .22 and as large as a 5" Colt 1911 (pocket or IWB). I live in a good area but home invasions do happen alot in Maricopa county. Better to have and not need than to need and not have!

We have plans for SHTF situations from simple extended power outages all the way up to total society breakdown. Getting the whole family out to a 400 acre plot of land is gonna be a nightmare but it has been planned for.

If something happens I don't want my wife and kids to suffer or die because I didn't do my duty as a father and husband and prepare for the worst. Remember folks, societal breakdowns have happened and will happen again.

I'm not paranoid... I'm prepared
