ARIZONA Gun Theft Laws

I'm trying to find any laws requiring notification of law enforcement if a gun owner is leaving a gun at home when travelling on vacation. I'm pretty sure there is also a law that requires a gun owner to report the theft of a firearm within a few days. I'm only interested in Arizona and Federal law...can someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks.

I don't know. Why would you not? I personally would want my gun back.

Ok, that was half of what I needed to know...I do appreciate the response. As for reporting the stolen weapon, I'm not asking if I should, I'm asking if it is law and if so what is the ARS.

I am not aware of an Arizona statute that requires reporting thefts within a fixed time frame. However you will find the Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) at the following link:

It has a searchable database and you can enter key words. If there is something you should be able to find it.

If you are an FFL holder (dealer or collector), there is a federal law requiring you to report the theft of a gun from your collection or inventory. I don't know the details--I figure I'll google them if whoever steals my guns leaves the computer behind.

Why not? Because I have heard stories of harrassment by LEOs when someone reports the gun stolen. They begin to question why you had this gun, what other guns you have, why, why so many.

And what purpose does it serve? Are they going to put a task force on finding your gun? No. Are they going to put out a notice? No. If used in a crime, will it be determined to be your stolen gun and returned to you? No. Will the police put out a warning that there is another loose gun out there and to be more "careful"? No. I am beginning to wonder what purpose it serves other than to lead to your potential harassment.

That is stupid. I hate cops but if they harass you then you inform them you are the victim and to get the F out of your home or file the report like they are there to do.

They won't actively search for the gun, but if it ever shows up, you MIGHT get it back....as opposed to you flat out won't get it back if you do nothing.

If it's in the database as stolen and the cops run across it in someone's possession, it's going to be a bit harder for him to convince the cops it's his gun.

Thanks. Nice input. You also need to look at all potential outcomes, inside and outside the box.

Yes, you "might" get it back, and also, you "might" become the target of harassment, rightly or wrongly, and you "might" also be the target of a civil suit that someone files if they are victimized someone using that gun in the future and they can argue in court that you kept it unsecured in a manner deemed appropriate (by someone other than you). You may be in the right or not, but it doesn't really matter or keep you from being harassed or sued. If some cheap a$$ gun is worth that much to you, do whatever you want.

If I had one stolen, it would depend upon the gun, and how I would weigh my risks on what action I would take.

I, by the way, don't hate cops, I hate our lawmakers.
