Army adopts new 5.56mm round...

The M9 had problems because some people were shooting hot submachine gun loads in it, not because it can't handle regular pistol loads. Once it was noted what was going on, the word got out to really look at the NSN on ammo and understand what it's for.

M4's will shoot minute of soldier beyond 300m, it's well documented the soldier is the problem, not the gun. Get bullets coming back at you, all of a sudden no gun is accurate or powerful enough. Experience and skill make up for a lot, but the folks doing the shooting just won't stand up in Hunter Orange and make it easy for some reason. No, it's not about being fair.

Lot's of us complained the HMMV wasn't hardened, but what did it replace? The jeep, a soft skin no armor commander hauler. Up til now, the entire class of vehicles never had armor because they were largely a behind the lines mover, not tactical hauler. Well, welcome to LIC, it's all a front line, and it all needs to be uparmored. We're going to war with what we have.

I should live long enough to hear complaints that the soldier is tired of wearing body armor, why can't they uparmor the exoskeletons to hump that and lose some of the weight . . . yeah, soldiers bitch a lot, I did too.

same thing here the M4s we got over there have such short barrels dont matter what they do its going to be innacurate
Short barrels actually tend to improve mechanical accuracy very slightly, by reducing barrel flex. You do lose some sight radius (if you're stuck with irons, which M4 users in the military increasingly aren't) and you lose some velocity, but you don't lose accuracy if you're using an optic.

Looks like the new M855A1 is going to be a good round. I want to know what the increased velocity is?

Also making it out of the two seperate metals and the ring around the middle should help with fragmenting I would think.

By golly, you've got it. Some of those barrels are just over 11 inches long. There's lots of noise and muzzle blast and little action 200 yards down range.
Ive got a friend in 5th group that would disagree with you about that statement. He has had ZERO problems with his Mk18 in Afghanistan.

The increase in velocity is from more effective powders that burn completely, they tend to burn cleaner without a lot of unburnt powder, so more powder burns in less space.

Also I still think 7.62 NATO is better.

The new round may not be available, but I bet a lot of the older ammo shows up as surplus soon.

I understand that, I wanna know what the new muzzle velocity is.

I should have written it more clear.

i am currently deployed, and i have not seen this round in my neck of the woods. we are still using m855, i will get with the local EOD team (they have all kinds of ammo and good stuff) and see if they have any on hand, and if so i should have no issue getting some and running it at the range. won't be able to get any velocity measurements though.

I wanna know what the steel tip is going to do to all those M4 cuts in the upper receiver....

Possum take care and have a smooth deployment, hope your EOD units have some 855A1 to screw around with.

thank you, and i will do my best. hey are you in on the local IDPA scene back home? are you going to the GA state match in OCT? if so i might see you there depending on when we get back.

Not much, I still haven't gotten into any competitive shooting beyond the State Marksmanship Program (if you are any military personnel in the states check it out, it is a superb program), but rock your divisions. What type of unit are you out there with?

sorry the desert must have fried my brain, i have you confussed with someone else. bu to answer your question i am in an Infantry PLT attached to Aviation we are USD-North's PRT, downed Pilot recovery(not the helos themselves) isolated personel recovery, etc. actually we were in the latest edition of American Handguner, at the back but in there, we are in front of a UH 60 with our Grayman Knives.

Probably Deer Hunter, that's his area and he is definitely into competitive/IDPA shooting, and we've been on THR about the same amount of time.

And now knowing your unit's specialization I'd hope you have a really boring deployment.

Really boring.

so far it has been, thankfully.

That's what I like to hear from all my Active and deployed friends.

Especially 11B ones.
