Around the house, where do you keep weapons.

i have thought of carrying a gun around the house with me but i thought that the wieght would get me. no offence but people that carry their guns around the house all the time may be slightly paranoid. I have a mosin nagant behind a door with ammo sitting right next to me. I would like to get my own handgun or semi-auto rifle but the nagant will have to do for now.

There is no offense taken. I'm not paranoid. The fact of the matter is that I'm better off carrying my gun for multiple reasons you may not have considered:

-It's more secure than your mosin nagant that is not in your control.

-I don't have to worry about anybody passing by a loaded rifle that's around the corner.

-It's way quicker compared to your method in any way you look at it.

-It's comfortable, and I don't notice it's here unless threads like this come up.

-My carry piece is about one second away no matter where I am on my property.

-My self-defense is part of my everyday lifestyle, and I don't have to get ready because I am always ready without effort.

Paranoid? I call it prepared. Good luck getting a Mosin nagant into action, quickly and effectivley when something goes bump in the night, I wouldn't call that the best CQB weapon.

I have a gun hidden behind the drywall, in between every stud pair, at my shoulder height.
In event of emergency, punch wall, grab gun, begin firing.

Or maybe I just carry at home, or keep the holstered CC pistol in the same spot every time I set it down.

Either way, I can't remember, but I surely don't have guns hidden in the ceiling, where only I would ever think to look for them.

Not to mention the Mosins have "Energizer" bullets that just keep going, and going, and going, no telling when or where the bullet may stop, or whose house it may be in. I just keep my Officer's Model on my hip, keeps things simple. The wife wouldn't dig me stashing loaded weapons around the house, especially with our 12 y.o. grandson living with us, and his friends coming around.

Now, if I was single, I'd have 'em everywhere! That's why God made High-Points, for hideout guns.

You only really need one gun in the house if you keep it on you 100% of the time. I have more than one because I want to but there is always one in my pocket.

you should lock the door to your room at night as well to buy you some time to grab the shotgun. I sleep pretty soundly so i need that extra time.

I am not one who likes the idea of having weapons all over the house. I feel that it only serves to arm a bad guy or guys who unlawfully enter my home. I keep the "house gun" in or on the nightstand and everything else is locked up. I am at peace when I am at home and although I have a house gun available, I do not carry it while sitn in my easy chair.

Hmmm -

Haven't heard anyone really address HD strategy here, which,

To me, is critical to how you set up.

Let's just assume you are trained & comfortable with your weapons.

OK. What next?

Look at all potential entry points to your house,

And rate them for ease of access.

(Side point: you will probably end up strengthening some of them

As best you can after the analysis)

Second - and this is the biggie, are you planning static defense

Or mobile defense?

Static defense implies retreating to an area, hardened or not,

And responding from there.

Mobile defense implies both advance and retreat; movement

In a fluid situation.

If you opt for static defense, then all your arms/ammunition

Would be at arm's reach in, say, your bedroom.

If you opt for mobile defense, then you might want to look at

The best firelanes for both advance and retreat

With respect to the most obvious points of ingress into your house.

Not counting windows, I have four exterior doors, each

With a different geometry once you get inside.

Now, I live way out in the country, so I don't

Have to worry about penetration through walls and such.

The best way to figure out firelanes is to physically test and

Practice them. Once you have done that, you may

Want to stash weapons in several locations most suited to

The firelanes you have chosen.

Be realistic about your physical ability to respond.

I'm on the downhill side of middle age, and my reflexes

And my eyes are definitely not what they used to be.

On the other hand, if you are a twenty something,

Reliance on pure reactive speed isn't a big help either.

We all need to walk, talk, and chew gum at the same time.

Once you have done that, then more practice.

Try setting your alarm, for, say, 2:30 am, then

Go through the HD drill when the alarm goes off.

Started doing that as prep for Y2k (remember Y2k?) and,

Frankly, the first results were freakin' terrible.

Also pissed of my wife no end (she used to be anti, but no longer!)

More reps, and it got a lot better.

Why the reps? Because when it goes down

You don't have time to think.

You will be relying on muscle memory and neurological memory.

Instinct through training is faster than thought.

Anyway, I'll get off the soapbox now.

My firearms stay where they are normally stored inside the house unless I need to get one. I don't carry any around unless I am trying to get comfortable with a holster or something.

Something significant is going to have to happen that causes me to carry inside my own house. It has not happened yet.

For as many as I have I should have one on every floor but currently only have two in the bedroom and the rest in my gun room in the basement. My wife is always telling me that we need to put one on the main living area so I think I will put my G19 on top of the fridge.

I don't understand the resistance to carrying concealed in the house. To me, it seems way less "paranoid", far better prepared, (and a considerably safer idea), than leaving guns "hidden around", like on top of the fridge and such.

Let's see....................

I don't have one in the kitchen sink, in the bathroom sink, in the tub or in the toilet bowl.
Other than that they are pretty much everywhere.

It just so happens that within reach right now is a S&W 3 inch J Frame, a 2 inch S&W L Frame, a PA-63 9x18, a .380 Sphinx, a laser/light equipped 12 ga Ithaca shotgun, a Yugo AK underfolder, a WWII Walther .380 and a POS Skyy CPX-1 (that I'd rather throw than shoot).
Oh yeah, I forgot about the Polish P-64 in the drawer.

I have a gun hidden behind the drywall, in between every stud pair, at my shoulder height. In event of emergency, punch wall, grab gun, begin firing.

Hope you have thinner drywall in those locations. I can see the red letters on the wall, gun here, in the event of emergency, break wall.

I was present once during the search of a house where drugs were made and sold. What really surprised me was the checking of walls with metal detectors and other devices for storage locations and so forth.

well lets see i got a .22lr unloaded by the front door for rabbits and coyotes the i have my .30-06 above the fireplace also unloaded, then next to the bed is my revolver fully loaded and in the closet my 12guage is loaded with 5 more in the side saddle

If a gun is not with me, it's in a safe.

I'd rather take my chances getting to a locked up gun, than risk an unattended gun getting into the wrong hands.

Since I got my M1 carbine recently, I'd REALLY like to have that puppy stashed and ready to rock. I really like that little rifle!

"How is a person who carries their sidearm with them any more paranoid than someone who keeps a battle rifle behind their door?"

That made me laugh. Thank you.

Also, Isher, I want you in my house next time I have an emergency.

Psychospec has the idea....the internet is far less anonymous than people think. Unless you use an email for just one site (and the email is not linked to another and is not an ISP email), and use that email just for here, and your email identifier and account name are unrelated to any other online personnas, then assume you are not anonymous.

Even on true anonymous forums (no registration), sometimes people can ID other people on their grammatical style and punctuation. That's something to ponder for a while, how unique is your style of online communication?

Where I keep my guns is frankly none of your business. That being said, I have a sidearm on my person at all times.

that's not even anonymous, you need to be spoofing your mac and going through multiple foreign proxies that do not store any data (IP etc.) about who connects through them, this would make you untraceable to 99% of people. to be completely untraceable to even the gov you would need to get some kind of laptop bought with cash and then connect to an unsecured wireless network in some random neighborhood and then run through a bunch of proxies in the 3rd world, and then completely incinerate the computer's hard drive immediately afterward.

anyways you are FAR from anonymous online these days especially if you are connecting through your own ISP with your home computer, but most internet users are pretty unaware when it comes to this stuff.
