Arrested for reporting a MWAG....

There's a time and a place for everything.

Open carry in an urban environment, especially parading around in a Starbucks like some morons did, is just wrong in my opinion.

It's not hunting, it's not the farm, it's not a range, it's city streets. People, including myself, are paranoid about people open carrying or pulling guns out where they have no reason to.

Legal, yeah, but wrong just the same.

Admitting that you are "paranoid" might not be a great idea when trying to convince others. Paranoia is a form of mental illness, and while you're undoubtedly overstating your feelings, it certainly does express that the problem in the situation is with YOU, not with the person you're reacting to.

The other thing to consider is that many of the people in the Starbucks pictures were not open-carrying their sidearms. They were BRANDISHING guns in ways wholly, and close to criminally, inappropriate.

Someone standing in line with a holstered handgun on their hip should be of no concern to ANYONE, ever. Someone walking into a restaurant with a shotgun gripped in both hands certainly sends a completely different message.

I agree with this completely. Some of those images in the starbucks threads surprised me a bit. When I think of a person open carrying a long gun, I picture it slung over a shoulder. But it got me wondering; How does a person distinguish between carrying and brandishing of a long gun? Being that there is no holster being used, it seems like there's a very fine line between the two.

I know if I walked into a starbucks and saw this guy standing there, I'd find myself ready to draw and his intentions would have my full attention.

You all who have a Concealed gun should keep it Concealed. The person who let his gun be shown or seen should be in jail. The only time the gun should become visible to others is when the gun is needed to protect yourself or others. I have hand guns for hunting, target shooting, and short barreled guns. I do not have the right to alarm or scare people by mishandling firearms in public -- Do you think you have that right ???

You are wrong.

Very, very wrong.

There was a thread on DU about the Starbucks letter and a couple of people stated clearly that if they saw an open carrier they'd call 911 report a man with a gun and hang up so the police would rush to the scene expecting an active shooter.

That is more alarming than a person open carrying to me and I'm not an open carry guy

'Caller ID' is a wonderful thing (as well as everything available to LE after you call 911 from your phone). It's not like you can just walk up to a payphone when you want to break the law with your phone call these days.

How does wearing a holstered gun equate to "mishandling" a firearm? It's not even "handling" much less "mishandling". Do you live in the US?

And if you're in the supermarket, bend over to get something off the lower shelf, your shirt rides up slightly and shows your gun, you should be in jail?
Hell, with friends like this who needs enemies?

I work about three blocks from the TD Bank in question, and interestingly enough, this:

http://connecticutfirearms.blogspot.com/2012/02/summary-of-issues-in-goldberg-v.html

Took place at a Chili's also within a few blocks of this most recent incident

The Goldberg case did a lot to clarify CC and OC in Connecticut, although it was a painful process for Mr. Goldberg.

While OC is far from common here, any discussion I have with police officers leads me to believe that much training and re-orientation of viewpoint has occurred regarding OC.

And I don't and won't OC, but inadvertent display is now pretty much a non-issue here.

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

I'll bear however I damn well please (which in my state means on my own property only). Don't infringe upon my God given rights.

Quite a difference between "inadvertent display being a non-issue" and "a child's partially eaten sandwich perceived to be shaped like a handgun thus a major-issue".

Glad to hear of the progress in CT.

Forgot which forum you're posting on? This is the pro Right to Keep and Bear arms forum ;)

Welcome to the land of the free. Freedom does not guarantee safety or comfort.

Maybe you should know the history behind that photo?

"That pic is of me [not me, NavyLCDR, but the guy in the photo], on an Army base in Kuwait. It was the closest Starbucks to the base the Navy had us on back in 2005. In order to leave base, you needed four things:
1) Signed permission from your Commanding Officer
2) A Cell Phone
3) At least one buddy
and lastly
4) Weapons

We could not leave base without weapons of our own, or an armed escort!

So we drove from Camp Patriot to the inland Army base for things like Starbucks and pizza! It was a little taste of home!

It became a mantra.."Grab your guns, were going to Starbucks!"

We took those pictures at the Starbucks on base where we all were carrying, to send home to friends and show them how "bad" we had it! My comment at the time was "And you think the line at your starbucks is bad!"

Some of the comments regarding your story bothered me, until I sat back and realized that people will believe what they want, regardless of the facts.....especially if they don't have them!"

Sorry, I don't need to hide my Rights, and it is immoral for you to ask me to.

Please don't carry books in public, they are full of odd and disturbing ideas and the mere sight of them being lawfully carried might frighten an ignorant person who needs his feelings and self-righteousness coddled.

Legal, yeah, but wrong just the same.
So, only rural people should be allowed the privilege of some limited freedom? Legal = "wrong"?

Oy vey.....

P.S. Lawful carry and "pulling guns out" are two very different things.

And there I agree. Safely slung (with the muzzle controlled) is one thing, actual posing "at the ready" is quite another. That is where I draw the line.

And thus we prove that the back-ground story makes all the difference.

My apology if my prior comment was... miss-aimed.

I find it ironic that the same photo is also posted several times with the caption "This is why we can't have nice things!". Since that is a Sailor, serving his country half way around the world, either on his way to or from a combat zone, I feel the more appropriate caption would be "This is why we CAN have nice things in America!"

I’ve seen your post on this on various forums and not that I doubt you, I’d like to see your documentation on this. Do you have a link to the original posting?

I suspect that the person legally carrying in the bank was a LEO and had he not been a LEO the story would have had a different ending.

I hope that's not the case but this story just sounds too good to be true.
