Hello,

First off I am new to the forums, so Hello! I've lived in California all my life so I've been privileged to see the transformation first hand, what a nightmare it is now.

I have been looking to get a new rifle and if I were permitted to I would most likely get a nice AR. However, remember I'm in California so the AR is not an option. Infact many things aren't an option.

I would like to pick up a rifle that is essentially an assault rifle in either 5.56 or 7.62. What I am looking for is a rifle that will function and serve as an assault rifle without technically being an assault rifle.

Some things I must cope with; No pistrol grip, thumbhole stock or folding stock at all. Detachable magazines are OK but nothing over 10 rounds. No flash hider or flash suppresor. No barrel shrouds or ventilated hand guards. No bayonet lug.

I've thought about this for a bit of time now and all I've come up with is a Mini-14 or Mini-30. I've heard some less than good things about these rifles so I'm still looking for other options.

Your feedback and help in finding a suitable and legal rifle for me is greatly appreciated.

The Ruger Mini's are your best bet.

And don't listen to the bad mouthing, if you put in a little time and money into it, a mini can perform to AR standards.

How about an M1a in 308? wood stocked with a muzzle brake instead of a flash hider. Another good choice would me an M-1 Garand converted to 308 very pc, its wood stocked and has no flash hider and uses 8 round enbloc clips. Enbloc clips can be had for well under a buck if you buy them in quanity.

KaceCoyote: I checked out the Kel-Tec and I'm liking what I see. One question though. This is a quote from the Kel-Tec website; "The stock and trigger mechanism can be folded forward for added safety and to facilitate secure storage or carry under extreme conditions." I wonder if this would make it illegal for California?

Rebar: What would need to be done to the mini's to put them at AR standards and would those mods make it illegal in California?

Had a Mini 14 .223 for 15 years. Shot 4-5000 rounds a year with it. When I sold it, it was still as reliable as a Timex watch and would shoot better than I do. I would buy another.

My advice, Move out of California would be your best bet. :D If that's not possible I thought most SKS's were still available in Commieland. I have an Yugo 59/66 that I got for just over $100. Besides only holding 10rds and no pistol grip, I like it better than an AK. Mine's pretty darn accurate as well. I can pop oil cans at 75-80 yards consistently with it. In fact I keep it as my truck gun, since it's so cheap I won't be out much if someone steals it.

Yeah no kidding, I would in a second. Problem is I'd have to go without my wife and that would be no good. I have family in Nevada and they tell me stories of buying guns at garage sales and seeing machine guns at shows...blows my mind.

An SKS is your best bet. I've got two of them. A California legal Yugo 59/66 with the muzzlebrake welded over the grenade launcher, and a chinese with a fixed magazine. No detachable mags, no flash hiders, no pistol grips, and I think that covers it.

Get a Garand. Although I would love an AR or AK, the M1 will do anything you will ever need a defensive rifle to do. In many ways it is superior to an AR or AK. In some ways it is not. With an M1 you will be well armed.

Because the kel-tec cannot fire when folded, its not illegal. The SU is light, handy, quite accurate and takes AR mags. AR mags come in anything between 5 and a hundred round magazines. Stores extra mags in the stock, whats not to love?

Out've the box the kel-tec does its job quite well, personally I dont believe a rifle should have to be modified to compete. If I buy a gun, i want it to be ready to rock and roll right there and then.

Get the barrel cut to 16" and recrowned, put a muzzle brake on it, then bed the stock. All CA legal, not that expensive, and will get you a rifle that will likely outshoot you.

I would go with the SKS. I have both an SKS and an AK right now and I am thinking pretty hard about selling the AK and using some of the cash to buy another SKS. I just never could shoot an AK very well.

how about just getting a winchester 94 or a marlin 336 in 357 mag? ASeems like it'd be awhile before those are banned.

What about the saiga's, are those banned?

You can buy a brand new SU-16A for 350 bucks.

That's pretty good. The Kel-Tec website lists it at over $600. I would think here in California I would be paying alot more than $350.

Kel-Tec also has a SU-16CA with a shortened barrell to 16". Does anyone know if accuracy is affected by this or not?

You guys absolutely rock with all this info! Right now I'm somewhat leaning towards the Kel-Tec. They also have a SU-16CA with a shortened barrell to 16". Does anyone know if accuracy is affected by this or not?

Get a Garand

Aren't the Garands going for well over a thousand $? If so that's out of my leauge financially.

Nope. You can get a genuine USGI M1 Garand straight from your friendly federal government for just $325 plus shipping: http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm

Note: $325 is the price for a "field grade", which means it is used. It will be serviceable, though, and the barrel will be plenty good for recreational shooting and hunting for at least a few thousand rounds. If you ever decide you need more accuracy, you can have it rebarreled in either .30-'06 or .308 Winchester for about $250-300.

I have an SU-16A which I like a lot, but if I had to do it over again I would have gotten a CA version if they had been out at the time. The accuracy of the SU-16CA is not affected by the shorter barrel. Over on www.calguns.net, one of the members was getting around 1 MOA groups out of his SU-16CA. What attracts me the most to the CA is actually the dust cover on the side of the receiver. Here is the link over to the thread on calguns.
