Assault Rifle equivalent

You may be able to find a used M1A for around $1,100, or you could pick up a Poly/Norinco (Chinese made M1A) for around 5-600.

Mini-14 are very popular - I have one, but expect 3-6" groups out of the box. Extremely reliable - even bouncing around in the back of the truck. Look around the web, there are several places that do modifications for better accuracy- usually a thicker barrel and new gas block.

I think the Kel-Tech is nice (don't have one) and light, but I don't really like plastic. I would try one, but only for under 400. Hopefully you have some AR mags in storage.

I just picked up a Spanish FR-8 (curio bolt gun) that shoots 7.62, is scout sized, has a flash hider, takes stripper clips, and has a hooded gas lock sight. Pretty cool rifle, but I assume you want something semi.

First choice: M1A
Second choice: Ruger Mini-14
Third Choice: Maybe Kel-tech - but probaby a Benelli Super 90 shotgun or Mossy 590A1 12 guage.
(of course there will be a 1911 in the mix)
Fouth choice: run like he11

Hey Mitch...thanks for the info,

Yeah I'm definitely going for the semi on this one. I already have my curio rifles (Enfield .303 and Mosin-Nagant). Pistol category is also filled (Sig P239 .40cal). Looks like all I need now is a semi rifle and some running shoes ;)

Levang compensator. Its one of the few comps around engineered to try and enhance accuracy, while I dont believe it enhances accuracy in -any- way it sure doesnt hurt it as much as some others.

CA Legal Crossfire

Pump .223/12 gauge combo rifle.

It's legal because it is a pump, not semi-auto. It uses AR mags. My local gun dealer had a new one for $1895. The one in the pic is much less and is listed at gunsamerica. Crossfire LLC is out of business I think.

I would consider it if there was someway they could have made the rifle semi-auto. The price would be ok because I then wouldn't need to buy a shotgun as well. The thought of a pump .223 rifle just turns me off big time though.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the SU-16CA. Now I have to find a place in communist northern california to buy one lol

Go onto www.calguns.net and ask around there. I know there are some members there that are FFLs and will treat you fairly. Honestly while my personal preference is with the SU-16, I would definitely handle the Mini-14, SU-16, or any other possible rifle to see what you want. Personal preference does matter, and in some areas the Mini does perform better. I would also include the M1 Carbine as an option as well. Probably your most cost effective semi automatic rifle would be an SKS. Just make sure you weigh all the pros and cons of any given rifle before you purchase one.

What about the saiga's, are those banned?

Yeah, anything based on an AK action is banned in Cali, IIRC.

...

You have my condolences.

Another vote for a Cali legal SKS

10 rds, decent accuracy, pretty hand, enough power, and can be reloaded quite quickly from stripper clips (with practice) if need be.

I have been looking to get a new rifle and if I were permitted to I would most likely get a nice AR. However, remember I'm in California so the AR is not an option. Infact many things aren't an option.

If you want an AR, why not get a Cali Legal Fixed mag version? Fab10, Cabushmaster, and Vulcan all make CA DOJ accepted AR type lowers. Only thing is, it sucks having a fixed 10 round mag. But, if you got an M1A and didn't already own hicap mags before the ban, you would still be at 10 rounds, just detachable.

I own a registered AR15, a couple of the CA legal versions and a couple M14 types. They are all fun, just buy what you want and what you can NOW, before someone gets to writing a new anti-gun bill and passes it into law.

I'm currently on a 2-3 rifle and 1 handgun(lame law) a month schedule... as long as the bank acct can sustain it.
Cheers.

IMO the BEST rifle you can get in CA is an M1A, followed closely by an M1 (leave it .30'06).

But if those are out of your price range, the SKS is your best bet. AFAIK, only the SKSs with the grenade launcher are a no-no. SKSs are good, clean fun, more accurate than most AKs anyway, clips are fast to reload, provided you practice, and although they're fairly heavy, that means they have little recoil. If you must, you can get synthetic stocks for them (sporter-style for CA use).

If you really want a .223, the Mini 14 really does have almost as many accessories available for it as an AR does, and they can be made into accurate rifles. Also, being in CA, the biggest complaint about the Mini (Ruger refusing to sell anything but 5 and 10-rounders to us peasants) doesn't make a difference to you.

Roger that,

The closest you're gonna get to an assault weapon (excluding FAB 10s, or Cali FALs, RA M96) is the M1A.

They are pricey though, runs around $1250 starting. But they are the closest you'll get to the "assault rifle."

For more information on the M1A/M14 platform rifle, check out www.m-14forum.com

Next, check out the Calguns website. There you'll meet a lot of good people in the same situation. www.calguns.net/eve

Check the for sale section on the Calguns website. There is a Polytech unfired M14 for sale around $800. It'll fit your needs almost perfectly. It should be on page 1 or 2.

Good luck.

Note: $325 is the price for a "field grade", which means it is used. It will be serviceable, though, and the barrel will be plenty good for recreational shooting and hunting for at least a few thousand rounds.

Nope, field is $375. Rack is $325, and I would stay away from them unless planning on rebareling. Ever since redoing the M1 pricing scheme back in April, very few good racks seem to be getting through. A field is roughly equivalent to th egood racks of a while ago. Service Grades are the best, at $500.
