Uh oh! You didn't just say "ASSAULT RIFLE" did you!? Your in a world hurt buddy, be prepared to to catch a lot of flack for even SAYING those words. HOW DARE YOU!? A million people are going to come along and tell you how politically incorrect that phrase is. Its ok though, we still accept you with open arms. Welcome to the High Road.

What do you want to Assault?

My .223 Remington can assault a Woodchuck with assaultive authority, one shot-at-a-time. My bolt-action, four-round magazine would not be very effective in today's terrorist wartime, but 14x accuracy may make up for that short-coming during homeland defense. I can get five rounds of authority by shoving one up the spout in addition to my tiny reservoir, but that's it. I am so much an American Sportsman that it often hurts. I know criminals don't follow any rules, nor do terrorists. An AR-10 in .243 Winchester could blow-away my best efforts, firepowerwise, but I remain undaunted with my "Homeland Defense" .223 Remington loads containing 60 grain Nosler Partitions. I call them "maximum delivery loads" and they split shale rock, such as found in Utah. Stay armed with the best you have, and terrorists should drop like flies. Love America: Cliffy

Here's an idea: Go to a nearby range or shooting club and ask the different shooters what they prefer and why they prefer what they shoot. If you're lucky, some of the shooters might let you handle or even fire their rifles. That way you can see which ones you like or don't like on a personal basis. You could also contact your friendly local NRA regional counselor to see what he suggests and can guide you to for help in selecting an assualt rifle/Homeland Defense Rifle/Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) and so on. If you ask him, the NRA rep can probably tell you the nearest place where you can rent a rifle to shoot, handle or look at too. To locate your nearest NRA rep, just call them at: (703) 267-1426, explain your situation and see what they suggest.

i think i would go for an AK-74 in 5.45x39. its about the cheapest centerfire rifle ammo out there right now. the guns are cheap and reliable, not incredibly accurate for the most part, but you could shoot it a lot on the cheap and without beating up your shoulder.
