Assault rifle options in California

If you have the money, Bushmaster and DSA make high quality California-legal military-lookalike rifles (AR and FAL respectively).

I came very close to plopping down $1500 on a DSA FAL before I decided I'd be better served spending the money elsewhere. I'd take a FAL over an AR since no disassembly is required to reload a California FAL.

If you're interested in Rimfire, a whole new set of opportunities present themselves. Ruger 10/22's with thumbhole and pistolgrip stocks, Rhineland Arms R22's, Walther G22's, the Evolution AR-15 stock for 10/22's, etc.

hm my .02

after my ar15 got stolen, i wanted to replace it with another battle rifle.

GF bought me a yugo sks for 179$. heavy as heck, longer than you would want, and sights leave quite a bit to desire. but - it's cheap, very reliable, and reasonably accurate (haven't done squat with the gun except clean it and I can get reasonably tight groups at 25yrds).

something must be wrong with the sights, though, because i keep hitting consistently 3 inches from where i'm aiming.

...

i plan on getting an su-16ca, but i don't know of any place in ca that sells them. i'm even willing to drive 100 miles twice. i've got 15 grandfathered magazines that are itching to be used.

An SKS with a fixed mag will do anything that an AK with a detachable mag will do (except jam)

Except fire more than 10 rounds without having to stop and reload.

I've got 2 SKS's and like them, they are more accurate than an AK. But the AK is a lot lighter, a lot shorter and the ability to accept 20, 30, and 40 round detachable magazines makes them far superior in any kind of firefight or SHTF scenario. Jam? Good God man, I've fired thousands of rounds of the worst quality junk ammo imaginable in all 4 of my AK's and can count the number of jams on the fingers of one hand.

But, with all that said, if I was in California, or any other area where I couldn't have a quality AK or AR, and needed a good rifle, the SKS would be high on my list, inexpensive, accurate, cheap ammo and reloads from stripper clips is about as fast as it gets without detachable magazines.
