So I would like to get a a little .223 gun for shtf/ everything, but mostly just for plinking fun on the range or maybe bunnies and such :) But the problem is I don't really like either the ak or ar platforms. I do really like the Galil but it seems I can't find a good one or one cheap enough. So my budget is about $1,200 (I'm flexible on this though). What should I get? If you know of a good galil or something extremely reliable and about 1-1 1/2 moa (flexible on this too) please tell me! Oh, and if it's mentioned here I'd prefer an 18 to 20ish inch barrel and it to be a tactical type rifle obviously. Maybe something that can take AR magazines like the galil (with an adapter)?

If you've got $1200 and SHTF the fan is a corncern, I'd get:

Canned Soup
Canned Food
Canned Nuts
Beef jerky
Bottled Water
Flashlight
Radio
Spare Batteries
Warm Clothes
Blankets
Pillows
A tent
Maybe a lantern
Soap and Shampoo
Razors
Shaving Cream
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Socks
A good pair of boots
Maps
Can Opener

Should have you well covered to start.

And I'm sure a few others can help out, lots of people here seem to be worried about SHTF.

I like my SU-16CA. Not pretty, but it's relatively cheap (leaving budget for ammo, food, and the others listed above). Also can fold it in half, takes standard mags, etc. Kel-Tec makes accessories if you want it super-picatinny'd out.

Galil is based on the AK. If I had to chose from the currently available non-AR/AK my choice would be a Mini-14GB.

I know the galil is ak-ish, but I still like it anyway... the remington is a very good idea but I think I would still prefer a semi.

Ok, so what about a ruger mini-14 rifle? Do those feel anything like a 10/22?

Not an AR or AK in 5.56

Microtech Aug clone: close to you price depending on where you shop (I think I paid $1400)

FN FS200 same pirce range as the Microtech

Sig 556

Robarms XCR

These guns might all be slightly more than $1200 depending on where you shop. Consider however, that all of the above can use AR mags and Pmags at $15 a piece or much cheaper than quality mags for a Mini 14, C93 (mags are real expensive), or the galil. I like to have at least ten mags for rifles. If you calculate in the price of mags it can really change the price considerations of guns. I also think that the above are much better guns than a mini 14.

Other possibilities:

SU16, Saiga .223 (this one you could also modify to be very galil-esque, charging handle, fore grip, folder, HK sights, extended mag release. You would need to run the numbers to see if doing so would make sence econimically versus buying a galil.)

PS Don't mind Dark Knight. He is one of those people that struggles with reading comp and thus did not realize the question was not, What is needed for a SHTF situation? or What is the best way to spend $1200 to perpare for SHTF? but rather what gun for 1200 would serve that purpose.

If SHTF you really cant go with what you LIKE you gotta go with what works.

You need a gun with lightweight ammo, thats reliable, that either folds or comes apart in 2 to fit into a pack / suitcase.

When SHTF and you need to be evacuated, the first thing they will tell you cannot come onto the plane / boat / truck is the gun across your back.

AR or underfolding AK are great options, the kel-tec is probably a good option too, but I dont have much experiance with them.

Also, if its a plinker, you really gotta try the CMMG conversion for the AR. It is a blast.

Who came up with that one?

The folks that understand it is of more value training to run a simple gun as well as possible than wanting all the tactical boat anchor weights.

IOW, if you can't run it under the conditions you're preparing for it doesn't matter how cool the gun looks.

The Galil is an AK type rifle. You may want to look at rifles that chamber 7.62 NATO. You'd be amazed what you can pick up a good Polytech M14S for.

I'm not totally against the ak or ar, but in my oppinion they're kind of boring and I already know alot about them. But the deawoo is a good idea and thank you all for your input; it's much apreciated (for those who actually answered the question lol)

http://www.classicarms.us/ Classic arms has Galoni (Galil) rifles for $579. The problem is that rifles with US made receivers seem to be hit and miss so you might be rolling the dice on it. You could also get an AR mag well adapter for it which would allow Galil mags or AR mags to be used. The adapter runs roughly $130 I think. You would have some money left for mags and ammo.

The rifles I listed are all at least as reliable as the average AR that I have been around in my experience with them. They are much more reliable than certain ARs I have been around. I would not dismiss them for an AR (or period) on account of reliability.

That link shows a "saigalil" a saiga done up in galil style. Depending on how close you want it to be and what work you do yourself it might fit your budget, it also might be a lot of money or effort spent mostly for the look. I would have more confidence in a saiga than century golani though. Of course you might find that any individual golani rifle runs like a top.

Another vote for Kel-Tec SU-16

Sig 556 wouldn't be a bad choice either but it would be a little above your requested price range, same with the MSAR 556 and XCR.

A new choice out next month or so would be the Czechpoint SA vZ-58 in .223. No pics yet, but it's not an AK or AR, and the 7.62x39mm version I have is an awesome rifle. Will have a .22lr adapter kit out in Feb or so, too.
As for the 527, fantastic little carbine, been asking CZ to offer higher capacty magazines, maybe a combo deal like the Mossberg JIC shotguns, but with a few more practical accessories...

That Kvar rifle looks to be a real good deal. The one shown is a 7.62x39. Do they have the .223s as well?
