Man provokes 2 police chases, faces multiple charges

Austin police are beginning to piece together two police chases that led to a man facing multiple charges.

Police went to arrest Jeffrey Cook for a parole violation Wednesday when he fled the scene in a car.

Police said after ditching the car, he broke into a woman's apartment.

His ex-girlfriend, Laura Sawyer, picked him up in another vehicle, beginning a second police chase.

A police dashboard camera showed the car colliding with a semi-truck parked on Parmer Lane and Interstate 35 and another vehicle on Parmer Lane and Lamar Street.

The driver of the second car was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Sawyer's car finally stopped and police managed to arrest Cook and Sawyer.

In addition to the original warrant, Cook is charged with aggravated robbery, unlawful restraint and evading apprehension.

Sawyer is charged with failure to stop and render aid as well as evading and hindering arrest.

first what the story leaves out is the following:
1. the woman was home when her home was broken into.
2. they lost him when he was in her apartment...for almost an hour there are many cops and a helicopter driving in circles clueless. Many of these officers were carrying shotguns, ar-15s, and drawn pistols. i heard through the door many chamberings but they had no idea where he is... guns drawn w/o perps location known.

The apartment he broke in to was my neighbor. They were looking for the guy with guns drawn and helicopter circling for almost an hour. Got to see about 20 guys with guns drawn in my front yard... pretty intense. Glad the guy didnt break into my apartment. I had a 45 in the living room and i was in the bedroom when i first heard voices and a helicopter outside... 10 minutes later it was swarming with cops - off duty and uniform. My first instinct was to get pants on and a gun in hand and secure interior of the house - i didnt know what was going on. It sucked because my strong hand is sprained so if he smashed my door in its either offhand self defense or deal with it(if i could even make it to the gun first, which i probably wouldn't have). I could have easily been in her shoes and i generally felt "prepared." Glad they caught him... but he will be paroled again soon enough.

what i learned from this:

keep guns under my control at all times..that means near me or locked up... not just laying around, kids or no kids.

There is no suitable cover in my apartment.

APD would have been too late for the woman held hostage if he intended to cause more harm than he did. I no longer speculate this...i witnessed it first hand

Due to the location, if it wasn't for his ex giving him a ride he would have been able to get away. Maybe i just know the area better than the BG did.

The HOA needs to consider hardening the condos. Putting in a gate could have prevented the most dangerous part of this.
