AWB Panic! . . . or not

ZIMMERMAN BEING AQUITTED OF TRUMPED UP CHARGES, OBAMA BEING EXPOSED AND TOSSED OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE.....ISNT THAT ENOUGH OF AN EXCUSE TO "PANIC" AND JUSTIFY TO YOUR WIFE OR YOURSELF TO BUY MORE AMMO, MORE MAGAZINES, AND A DESCENT SEMI-AUTO RIFLE?

an SKS and a case of ammo can run you about $500.00 total. after that a handgun or two of similar caliber and maybe one short bbl shotgun is all you need (along with a couple boxes of ammo for each). a ccw permit and youre off to a good start.

if you already have these things anything else is the icing on the cake.

What in the heck are you talking about?

OP talks of panic buying, AWB.....dont you already have your "assault weapon", magazines......the panic buying is for the folks whom havent seen the light yet....

The nation does not have a "gun problem" it has a drug/gang problem. None of the laws on the books will keep little johnny from getting a .38 so he can rob a store in order to pay for his "habit".

Here's an exception; last month XM193 boxes of 1K count ammo at an LGS were 308.00. I called for gits and shiggles yesterday, and same ammo was 459.00. Evidently there is price-gouging going-on somewhere? The boxes were from the same pallet(s) shipment to the dealer, so his price had not gone up one penny.

I bought an M1A during the Great Gun Panic of 2008. I regret that decision. I paid too much. Luckily I traded it and broke even several years later at a gun show. I've learned since then. I don't plan on NOT buying guns because of any panic, just exhibiting more discretion in what I buy. I believe that if we do go through another panic after the election, many guns (the black type) will soar in price, but many others not marketed as AWB type guns will stay in the same price range or even go down.

I've learned over the years that my GP100 with six rounds of .357 on my hip gives me just as much of a sense of security as my AR15.

I had a Glock 33 round mag in my hand at the gun shop the other day, for no good reason.

Put it back, but the thought is there.

Typically, it's not good to make emotional decisions.

YOU ARE YELLING about Zimmermen being acquitted and something about Obama getting exposed (exposed about what?) and tossed out...what are you talking about?

There is no reason to panic, or even worry about, another AWB right now. That is so far down the list of either candidate it is a non issue. Not to mention the difficulty they would face trying to get it passed.

Most of the right is not likely to vote for it, and many on the left haven't forgotten how many politicians lost their jobs over it the last time, so they are not likely to vote for it as well.

So cheer up, buy what you need or want, but quit worrying about it all disappearing. :)

Agreed. Even if Obama wanted to get an AWB in his last term he would still require the votes of many Democrats, and Republicans, who will have to run again.

WHAT me worry??:what::what: Yeah right.:D I have enough crap to supply the whole area for miles around. NOT buying any more unless there IS some sort of advance that's more than talk.;)

It isn't price gouging. Sellers will charge what they can get. If people are buying at those prices, the seller has little (or no) incentive to lower prices. If people stop buying at those prices because, for example, a competitor has the same product and level of service at a lower price, the seller will soon have to lower his price because he will start to run out of customers. If you paid $100,000 for a house in foreclosure 4 years ago and you think you could find a buyer who was willing to pay $150,000 today, would you be guilty of price gouging? I don't think so.

Then what exactly would you consider price gauging?

My sense is that the "panic" started in October with rumblings in September of 2008. It was in October when it began to sink in that McCain was not likely to win and Obama was the likely winner.

The panic of 2008 and 2009 was a sham that was built up by the forums and dealers who were apt to profit from it. It was a snow ball that started small and grew beyond belief and resulted in great shortages of firearms and ammunition. No panic. I wouldn't panic regardless of the current poll data that is being bantered about.

There can also be market collusion/Anti-Trust across several different companies. Look at the Ebook Settlement recently.
You're absolutely correct but I stopped short of mentioning it because I was afraid I was on the verge of starting an Econ 101 lecture. (Not that I am any kind of expert.)

Cue the Executive Order argument....NOW!

The only examples of price gouging I can think of would require a monopoly or a cartel.

Price gauging is when prices are rapidly raised to take advantage of a supply shortage. The supply shortage can simply be a result of a massive and rapid rise in demand. Common examples of demand rise are natural disasters, wars or fear of new gun laws. A monopoly or cartel certainly could take advantage of a supply shortage but price gauging is not defined by the cause of the supply shortage or demand rise.

So yes, when guns and bullets skyrocketed in price last pres election that was by definition price gauging.

Sounds like the law of supply and demand to me.

So if changes in supply and demand cause a rise in prices, that is "price gouging" according to what you wrote. I would disagree.

It is. And monopolies are a natural result of capitalism. But many would also consider both unethical and both are sometimes illegal.
