Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has once again introduced legislation to renew the so-called "assault weapons" ban. S.2498 was introduced last week, and, by using a "nuclear option" referred to as Rule XIV, has gotten the bill placed on the Senate calendar.

As a Senate educational article on the subject puts it,

"Most bills are routinely referred to the committee with appropriate jurisdiction as soon as they are introduced. But if a Senator plans to introduce a bill and believes that the committee to which it would be referred will be unsympathetic, Rule XIV permits the Senator to bypass the standing committee system altogether and have the bill placed directly on the Calendar of Business, with exactly the same formal status the bill would have if it had been the subject of extensive hearings and exhaustive mark-up meetings in committee."

The article goes on to say that this option is considered a last resort by Senators, because it "undermines the committee system as a whole and because they do not wish to encourage a practice that can be used against their own committees."

So, Sen. Feinstein and her 11 co-sponsors (the usual suspects) have thrown down the gauntlet, and a true showdown is shaping up. Once again, we must contact our Senators, ESPECIALLY those who voted against the AWB renewal amendment several months ago, to stand firm in their opposition to this ill-conceived and proven ineffective idea. Because the AWB renewal has enough votes in the Senate to pass, a filibuster is likely the only way it can be stopped there

The Senators who voted against the recent amendment renewing the ban need our support and encouragement to stand their ground, as it the rhetoric put forth by the anti-gun side will undoubtedly be intense and viscous.

It is unclear when S.2498 will come up for consideration, so let's get busy NOW.

You can see how your Senators voted recently on the AWB here.

Lawsuit immunity is a good way to kill anti gun bills too it seems. They have enough votes to pass that.

Remember --

Email your Senator, EVEN IF HE IS A GUN-GRABBIN' SOCIALIST.

These people most of all need to feel the weight of the hundred million gun owners in this country. Let `em know that the heat is on.

Email your Senator, EVEN IF HE(she) IS A GUN-GRABBIN' SOCIALIST.

Gee, guess who my senator is. :banghead:

Now where did I save those letters? Shouldn't she be concentrating on bulldozers instead after last week? Or maybe propane tanks. They're explosive you know. I mean, come on, it's for the children.

Letter sent... to Barbara Boxer :barf:

Oh, well. If we get enough in, even she may see the light :banghead:

I was made aware of this a couple days ago on this board. I'm all over it, again:cuss: , and again and again.........if that's what it takes.

Nice to see how she did it though.

Call your senators, folks.

If you're a Hoosier, lean really hard on Lugar. He voted to renew the ban last time it was attached to the lawsuit immunity bill.

looks like a renew only. no add on to it.

Phone cards at Walmart are a great way to do this on the cheap.

Let's get working on this!

OK,

I have unlimited long distance here on the home phone... and I'm willing to use it.

The only problem I have here is that I don't know who I need to speak to. Should I actually expect to talk to Mr. Graham and Mr. Nelson??? Or should I just expect to talk to some staffer who may or may not pass on my message? Seeing as I can guess the types of folks who would be on these gentleman's staff, you may be able to see my disdain in just talking to Joe Smith, Democratic staffer.

Any tips from people who have called in the past?

If I mail Feinstein a tomato, will she throw it on her own face for me?:barf:

I no longer call her my senator because I no longer live in the PRK..

she's a shining example of what ignorance can look like in adulthood.

That's a mistake - they aren't ignorant. They are elitists . . . . they don't care about the issues or the greater good.

They have theirs and they don't want you to have yours!

Letters away via GOA.

Agree with the "Lean on Lugar" 100%. Last time I contacted his office the prevailing attitude seemed to be that Their Boy had a lock on that seat just because of his "Republican" label.

He's been going back to Washington on the premise that so long as he votes the "right" way on matters concerning the interests of the Simons, Hilberts, Irsays, et al and keeps those re-election coffers full, he's going to keep being Senator-By-Default. The rest of us will keep voting for him just because we "must" to avoid the possibilty of getting someone who'll step on our toes even harder.

As long as that keeps working, the rest of us can "talk to the hand": as far as he's concerned he can do no wrong.

There is a cage much in need of rattling, Indiana voters. Make some noise!!

I called and e-mailed mine today. Will send letter shortly. Luckily Hatch and Bennet have both been against this thing every time it has come up.
