I recently bought a Springfield EMP 40.

My first shooting session was a trouble free 200 rounds consisting of four different hollow points (50 rounds each of Federal, Remington, and Winchester 180 JHP, plus 50 rounds of Ranger T 165).

I subsequently installed a Smith & Alexander stainless MSH, so I could get rid of the internal lock. A second change was to fit a right side only thumb safety by Cylinder & Slide; I don't need an ambidextrous version, as was originally installed. I installed a 25# Wolff mainspring to insure positive primer impacts; after leaving the pistol cocked for a week I was not disappointed, positive impact regardless of brand.

I sent the magazines to logman on the 1911 forum for his flush fit modification, excellent work.

Yesterday, I ran another 25 rounds each of Ranger T and Federal 180 JHP, plus a box of Hornady Zombie Max.

My EMP 40 has now flawlessly shot 270 rounds, love it, no complaints. :)

EMP 40 chrono results (average for at least 5 shots):
Remington 180 JHP @ 935 fps / 350# KE / PF 168
Federal 180 JHP @ 944 fps / 356# KE / PF 170
Winchester 180 JHP @ 952 fps / 362# KE / PF 171
Winchester Ranger T 165 @ 1,054 fps / 407# KE / PF 174
Hornady Zombie Max 165 @ 1,078 fps / 426# KE / PF 178

Three of the bullets were fired into jugs filled with water; penetration was consistent, with all three stopping at the back of the third jug and denting the fourth.
The Federal 180 JHP had a recovered diameter of about .63
The Hornady Zombie Max measured approximately .70
The Ranger T was .80 - .90 (including talon) depending on which side I measured.

Yea, the 3'' 1911 pistols are best for when when I'm using a Smartcarry or appendix IWB.

i'm with ya! i like federal HST in mine (with too much grease on it lol):

customized mine:

Harrison ion bonded trigger, wilson bullet proof trigger, EGW pins and plungers, NHC chainlink MSH, Ed brown slide hardcore slide stop and hex grip screws.

Apocalypse-Now: I like the chainlink on the Brown MSH, not as abrasive as cut checkering.

Very nice. I'm considering a 9mm myself. I know some parts were changed for the smaller than .45ACP frame. Is the thumb safety the same? Or is it Specific to the EMP? Looks like an Officer's ACP MSH works too.

Y'all spend $1000+ on a pistol and then change all this? For $1000+ if it ain't exactly what I want out of the box, forget about it!

Lucky Derby: The thumb safety is a standard size, Officers MSH.

1911's are not the cheapest option for SD. I could just buy a Glock (love them too) and be done with it, but variety is good; besides, this pistol feels better in my hand than my beloved Glock alternatives.

If you want a 3'' 1911 there are limited options.
Kimber Ultra is in the $900 range and has a "in the white" barrel and a plastic MSH.
Colt Defender is also about $900 and doesn't have night sights and has a plastic MSH.
Since the Springfield EMP can be had for about $100 more than the competition the price seems justified, a stainless barrel or night sights added to the price of the other pistols would quickly negate any initial price difference.

Not everyone will replace the internal lock MSH or ambi safety on the EMP, so the added cost for those changes is something I deemed necessary: YMMV.

What's wrong with Philippine manufactured guns? I have an American classic, and haven't had a single issue with it since I bought it.
Almost all self loaders I have seen from there use archaic single action trigger system. Modern stuff is DA/SA, DAO or hammerless striker fired stuff. Why would anyone choose to bother with lever/safties under stress to fire a handgun is beyond me.

I think most 1911 owners are tinkerers at heart, and half the fun of 1911s is changing stuff on them.

so, you're saying you'd rather buy a $350 Philippine 1911 and invest in all these changes?

Not at all, My pair of RIA "Tacticals" one in 9mm, other in 45ACP, left me with enough money for a case of ammo and I've done nothing to them but run many 1000s of rounds through them.

For what the EMP costs, if there is anything I dislike, I ain't buying it!
