Hi all, I'm going to be up in Dallas this Friday for an interview and was thinking of stopping by Bachman Pawn & Gun. I've purchased quite a few guns from them over the years at the Houston gun shows because their selection and prices are generally the best.

Does their Dallas shop offer an equally good selection? Friendly and knowledgeable folks? How decent is their selection of used guns?

Just wondering if I should stop there while I'm in town? Any good alternatives that I might consider (i.e. the lowest prices and huge selection)? Thanks all!

It had been discussed on this list and others that the store's pricing is different from ads and the shows. They supposedly get feisty if you challenge them. The shows and stores seem to be separate operations.

I had the same idea when I went to Dallas and I didn't find a gun Disney land. The store was just ok.

Three prices for everything. Mail order price, gun show price, store price, they don't like it when they have to point this out--like you should know it already and expect it--like you're an idiot for bringing it up.

Worth a visit if you're already in the area--you know, within a couple of miles. If you want to see some neat guns, go visit Ray's Hardware. Now that's a store worth a trip out of your way.

Ray's is a good choice. I've bought from Bachman's at Market Hall but was real disappointed in their store size/selection.

Ray's is a neat place. What burns me up about Bachman's is they still charge 3% to use a credit card, and they can't decide on which price to charge (gunshow price, shotgun news price, store price, etc).

Just my .02,

Stephen:
If you are still in town on Saturday, go to the Big Town Show in Mesquite (10 minutes east of dallas). They have a show there on Sat/Sun. Bachman is always there along with a number of competitors. I went to their Dallas store twice, mostly had higher prices but they were friendly. At the shows, prices are lower and the guns are not behind glass. I think they treat checks same as cash. BTW, if you do go to the shows, let us know how the prices compare to the ones at the Reliant show (I'm thinking about making a trip down to Houston).

You will get better prices from Bachman's if you will go to the Gun Show at Big Town Mall in Mesquite (Interstate 30 and Loop 12) this coming weekend on Saturday and Sunday. It will make your trip worthwhile. It's a great Gun Show...one of the best in the north Texas area. A couple of the salesmen at the Bachman table are a bit confrontational if you ask them a question, but some of the younger guys are quite friendly.

Thanks for the heads up, guys. Ray's Hardware sounds like my best bet. I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but with a large enough selection and good prices, there will certainly be something I need to have. Unfortunately, I can't make it to the Mesquite show on Saturday, as I have to race back to Houston right after the interview. :(

I've bought 4 or 5 guns from Bachman. The last time was my last time to buy from them. I merely asked in a friendly manner if they were going to be at the next show coming up the next weekend and the answer from the guy was an evasive "why?" Now, I know damn well they were going to be there and was just trying to make some friendly banter with the guy. I had seen the same guy at every gun show I've been to around Dallas for the past 2 years. I could tell he thought I was going to ask a question about getting a deal on the price of the gun. When the purchase was complete - he did not even thank me for my purchase or even say anything else to me at all! the last words he said was the total price of the gun - I handed him my cash, he handed me my change, put the gun in a bag, handed it to me without even making eye contact and immediately started talking to his coworker about something else. I stood there in amazement at what a lousy clerk this guy was!

I have no use for bad service people. The guys at Bachman remind me of the same types of idiots that you meet at a record store - The ones that sneer at your questions or act just too cool to care because somehow they equate working at a record store to being as cool as someone that is actually making music or in a band.

No more of my money will cross their palms...

Go to Ray's - much better all around!

No Quarter....I have to agree with you. I've been going to the Dallas/Ft. Worth gun shows for 35 years and the guys at Bachman's could sure use the Dale Carnegie Course on How to Win Friends and Influence People, or at least a basic course in courtesy and salesmanship. I'll bet I know the guy you are talking about. I've bought several guns from them too, but I always try to pick one of the young guys that help there at Bachman's...they are a lot more friendly to deal with. There are a couple of other (un-named) big dealers there that also have a real attitude problem....and I'll bet you know who they are. :)

Thanks guys. I feel the same way about Cheaper Than Dirt that you guys do about Bachman. I always had decent experiences there until one fine day when I walk in with a couple of trades to offer, they went and got their manager, Cody, I think his name is....he took one look and said "not interested" and walked off. No counter offer, no nothing. It was a couple of Taurus Revolvers and a Ruger Carbine. It's not that he said no, it's how he did it.

Then, on another day after overcoming being treated like that I go in to buy a Sig, (imagine that) and I asked them what there LEO deal is, (this was during the ban where different mags or prices were being offered to LEO's in I think the Sig Blue Line series)...the guy looked me right in the eye and said, "theres no difference" his co-worker heard that and started saying somthing like "hey we can,...." but never got to finish because the first guy turned his back to me and did some kind of hand gesture indicating either "shut up" or "this guy ain't a cop" or somthing. I've seen the guy since and he's always been nice since then, but I don't deal with people who will lie to me or turn their back to me and signal like I'm too much of an idiot to figure out what's going on.

I'll have to check out Ray's.....Rabbit, you in?

Alduro - Ray's is worth seeing - that's where I got my Silver Pigeon III fitted. Admittedly, it's only 25% of the shotgun you accuse Techbrute of having. Remind me to cuss you out sometime for starting me back on those shotties :)

I was at Bachman's twice - my first time and my last: coincidentally, they were both the same time. 'nuff said.

Anyhow, I can't believe nobody has mentioned THE pilgrimmage in DFW. I went there twice and I'm still stingin' from the experience. It hurts SO good. I mean, you have to be in Paris, Milano, NY or Buenos Aires to duplicate the rush...

Beretta Gallery

Second down from the top of the page. Easy to find. And, oddly enough, much friendlier than Bachman's. Go figure. Bring your credit cards at your own risk. No sympathy from me...

First time I'd ever seen a piece of lumber on the floor with a 15,000.00 price tag...and worth every penny. :what:

Absolutely required of any gunnie visiting Dallas.

The Beretta Gallery is a must see as well--but it's more of a showcase (note the name) than a store, IMO.

i work the similar gun show circuit that Bachman does, I see them at Mesquite, Dallas Market Hall, Houston Reliant Center, and Houston @ George R. Brown Convention Center.

i have purchased from them since they are a distributor. in fact i just did this week. i have a very good working relationship with them.

simply put, a dealer like myself cannot compete in terms of raw pricing with a distributor. distributors buy in bulk and thus get better deals so they can sell for less. that is the bottom line.

there are alot of people who will go to the lowest priced dealer in the show and pay cash, which is why they probably add 3% for credit cards. Bachman Pawn & Gun is not the only dealer who operates this way mind you.

there are other people who will go looking for the best "salesman." that means spending time with the person, answering their questions, being knowledgeable about the item they're looking at, being open to a little negotiation, or if not, being nice about it and explaining why, maybe going the extra mile to show the buyer that personalized attention. just being nice, smiling, talking to them with respect whether or not they don't know anything about the product to a guy who knows more than you about the product (yes there are many people who know more than me!)

the people who like the personalized attention are generally willing to pay a little more. the ones who know exactly what they want are generally willing to forgo the conversation, walk up, pay for it, fill out a yellow sheet, and leave.

there are other dealers that not only charge a credit card surcharge, but take a $20 deposit before you fill out a yellow sheet. if you back out of a sale due to a NICS Delay, they keep the $20. yes, at a gun show. so you are locked into a sale or you eat $20 so you can't go readily buy it from someone else, perhaps someone more local to where you live - you will be delayed anyway. for people with a CHL i suppose that is not a problem.

one thing i tell customers while i am at gun shows, is that yes dealer X over there may have a lower price on his gun vs. mine, but if you are not paying cash, then add his 3% mark up that i don't have, if you're delayed he'll keep $20 while i will not, and most of all, if you have a trade in, they may give you very little value in trade (remember, if they sell for less they buy for less, so if they can buy a new firearm for less they won't give you alot for your used firearm).

another thing is that i am a certified Bushmaster armorer (i sell alot of AR-15's) and my partner is a full time gunsmith and a certified Bushmaster armorer as well, so we stand by all of the items we sell, new or used. we will fix it for free if you buy from us and it breaks (not from your own abuse). others can't say that because they do not have the facility, knowledge, skill, or time to do it. that generally sets us apart from most of the other dealers in the show.

that is what makes a gun show good for the buyer though. if you go to Dealer X and he has terrible customer service but good prices you can take your money next door and buy from Dealer Y.

sorry to hear about your bad experiences but it is good food for thought for all dealers to read.

Alduro, I'll probably hit Ray's around 10:30 on Friday, assuming a 3.5 hour drive from Houston. 30 minutes to get from Ray's to 635 & Dallas Parkway (where I have an interview at noon) should be enough time, right?

I called on an ad from SG News once...totally different price if I didnt mail order with an FFL. That made me mad. I picked up a used 64-2 CDC trade in at the show...which amazingly enough was the same price when I was at their store a couple weeks later. They have virtually NO holster selection at all.

I was not really impressed and I think the gun show selection is MUCH better than the store.

I have never been to Ray's either, but have heard about it. I have also been told the CHL is a must when heading over there...not the best location.

They Lost My Business

I buy quite a few guns. Vistied Bauchman's once and was underwealmed by the customer service. I was interested in a $500 gun and they would barely talk to me...

That was enough for me... I spend my money elsewhere.

The Dallas gun shows have some good dealers, Doc's, Schram's to name two and there are usuall several more good people to do business with there as well.

FWIW

Chuck

If you're visiting North Dallas you might check out D-Ray's, NE corner of Forest and Preston, afterwards - not as awesome as the original Ray's (their parent), but friendly.

North of 635: If you're going up Central there are some other places you might visit too, but not much if you're going up the Tollway (AFAIK).
