As I prepared to test for my CCW I began to think about the implementation of the laws and in specific, when did carrying a gun become unacceptable? For example, Texas passed their CHL laws in ~1995. Texans have always had a stereotype of being cowboys and gunslingers. So from whence did Texans go from being open-carry cowboys to losing the right to carry to voting for it again in 1995- what happened in between? Let's take this to a broader prospective- nationally, when did carrying a gun become unacceptable and when were the laws passed that prohibited carry? My intuition tells me it was in the 1960s. I know at the turn of the 20th century, gentlemen frequently carried AOWs such as cane guns. I know these were regulated by the Federal Firearms act of 1934. But pistols must have still been acceptable as a method of carry, correct? Are there any members old enough to recall the change. I'm also interested in different geographic prospectives. For instance I suspect that someone from rural Alabama will have a different recollection than someone from New England on this (unless you live in Vermont of course... you lucky bastards :) )

that is a good question, you allways have been able to open carry long guns almost anywhere in texas, including shotguns, on yourself, or in your vehicle. heck the new black panther guys here, Quanel X's boys, allways walk around with shotties when they wanna look pissed off. Don't know when the handguns went away, though.
