Ok fellow High Roaders I just purchased a rossi wizard .223 as a backpack rifle for 219.00 new because its caliber versatility, open sights, solid simple construction, its ability to break down into 3 parts and stow in a backpack aaaaaaaand to really womp on some coyotes. Anybody here have experience with the wizard ? or any opinions as a backpacking firearm? Thanks and God bless !

Lots of back country hunters use full size bolt action hunting rifles strapped to the outside of the pack. If you're just looking for something to shoot opportunistically, rather than as the point of the expedition, though, I suppose lighter is better. It generally is where the word backpacking is involved.

I had one in .243, not very accurate. Lots of vertical dispersion, at 100 yards groups were about a foot tall by 4 inch. If you can get yours to group ok it should be an ideal backpack, survival tool.

For the money one of the Rossi's will probably work especially if you want to break it down and put it in a pack. I've done a lot of back country hunts over the last 40 years. My 1st was in 1977 and I swore off heavy rifles then. And that was when I was 19 and a lot tougher than I am now. There weren't many options back then. I was the 1st person I knew who bought a 1 lb. Brown Precision stock. Doing that and making careful optics and mount choices made for a pretty light rifle by 1980's standards. I have an old Remington 700 in the Brown stock that weighs the same scoped as the Rossi does unscoped and almost a pound less than the TC Encore.

My current back country rifle is my Kimber 308. It is 2 lbs lighter than the Rossi, almost 3 lbs lighter than the TC and is quite accurate. I cannot break it down and put it in my pack, but it carries in the hands well.

I know a Kimber is out of reach for many. A Ruger American would be my choice for a guy on a tight budget. Priced at well under $400 it is only a pound heavier than my Kimber, and much lighter and more accurate than the break action single shots.

I don't have experience with the Wizard, but like many people here I started off with a single shot shotgun. In fact I had two in my time. So, that's as close as I've ever been to a break open rifle. :D

Anyway, I'd put a ammo cuff on the stock on your new Rossi and go find out how it shoots for you. Nothing wrong with a good single shot that can take down into 3 smaller parts. :)

the only guy i know of that hunts with a rifle small enough for a backpack uses a TC encore .308 pistol with scope and bipod
