Ok Here's the deal. I love backpacking and LONG journeys. I'm looking for a good gun and here's the terms
(1) No pump action shotguns, automatic or semi automatic firearms.
(2) I want something that can be broken down and re assembled without tools.
(3)Must be currently on the market (Hate having to look around gun shows for discontinued second hand guns that are becoming less common.
(4) If its a shotgun, Nothing under 12 gauge, a rifle, 270 and up.
(5)Around 600-1000 is my price range.
(6) don't really care about looks, just reliability.

Basically a universally legal gun (ie, where ever guns can be legally imported, it's not on the prohibited list. That being said, I realize my options are lever, bolt, break action.

So ya, I've looked at the Stoeger coach, it's 50/50 mixed reviews. The Rossi wizard with 1, 12 gauge barrel, and 1, 45-70.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks:eek:

I was just going to suggest the Stoeger Coach, but you mentioned you had thought of it. I was planning on buying one and looked up every piece of information I could find of reviews of it. I found the vast majority liked it as a budged double-barrel. And I know it can be taken down to the barrel and the action/stock to be pretty compact.

Rossi makes some really simple single shot shotguns. They are easily broken down and fairly compact.

You seem to think you can't have a semi auto? If I was going backpacking and needed to have a trail gun. I wouldn't want to carry a shotgun/rifle all day. Get yourself a .357 magnum wheel gun, or glock in .45 auto. If it's not small or light enough you won't take it.

I own a Stoeger Coach Gun and it never fails to go boom when I pull the trigger.

If you like backpacking and you want to carry a long gun, you'll love Eberlestock backpacks. Shoot me a PM if you want to know more about them.

If point (2) means broken down into short pieces for carrying, I think the hinged, or 'break action' guns are the obvious choices. They are simpler than bolt or lever actions with detachable barrels.

I kind of like break action singles. Here's my take on how to reload them and take less than a week doing it:

There are various brands of single shot hinge action guns, ranging from dirt cheap to amusingly expensive; take your pick.

44 magnum 6-8 inch, any decent company like S&W, Taurus, etc. Good enough to take down anything you will run into. and still something you could carry in a chest or shoulder rig. You could go 454, 460 or 50cal, if you wanted even more but really not necessary
