It's a week before deer season and I get to take the Omega and the Zouave out for one more precious confidence building shooting session. (200 yards is, by the way, a long ways for a muzzleloader.) May as well not have gone. Forgot caps for the rifle-musket, and didn't figure it out till the thing was loaded. Oh, well, I can still shoot the Omega. Could not sit still to save my life! Flinching?! I used to shoot a .458 Winchester, and Ithaca slug gun that was brutal, and my dad's .416 Rem. I fired the Barrett .50 cal sniper rifle in the service. I know how to manage felt recoil, don't I? I fliched so bad with the T/C that I couldn't hit water if I fell out of a boat. All I managed to do was use up ALOT of that very expensive 777. Get home from the range. Go to use the CO2 discharger on the .58 and I'm out of CO2. (AAaargh!!!!) Then I take the Omega out of the guncase and the rifle promptly slides off the kitchen counter I had leaned it against and clatters on the floor. (Ohh, my new scope!) Sorry... had to vent a bit. Thanks:banghead:

Smokemaker, things will get better, we all need a bad day to humble us once and awhile. Where you going to be on opening day? Gettin close, can't wait. Looks like my brothers and I will be heading down to the Tier, either around Swain or over towards Belmont.
Just got back from a run down to the Gander Mountain store in Erie Pa., picked up a can of Goex 2F. Going to use it in a .54 T/C New Englander I picked up on Auction Arms a couple of weeks ago; load it under some Great Plains bullets, sighting it in tomorrow.
Good luck and good shooting!
:D

smokemaker ...... indeed .... there are days when Murphy seems resident ... over your right shoulder!!!:p been there.

One point tho ... re the flinching aspect ... I have to say that with my M/L guns ... particularly the .577 Enfied repro ... the addition of a slip on recoil pad was best thing I ever did. The extra length was good news anyways but . the added comfort was a bonus too.

My .50 cal in line is now also fitted up with a slip-on ... and even with quite hot charges .. is comfortable enough for no flinch ..

Venting?? ........ we all gotta do it!! ''Blowing smoke'' I call it.!:)

RCL,
If you're going to Erie to get BP, you must be in the southtowns? I'm up north by lake Ontario. Probably going in Newfane in the morning and definitely behind dad's house in town of Lockport in the afternoon. We've seen two nice bucks back there every night for a week now. For the first time this year, I haven't even taken the Shotgun out of the gunsafe. Going to try muzzleloader only this year. (last year I did about half-n-half with the shotgun and muzzleloader. Even took the old man's Savage 110 ML out once, but that's a "coulda been" deer story for another day. Suffice to say, don't go out hunting with a gun you've only pulled the trigger on twice.)

As for the flinches, I have sheets of soft foam insulation used in the piping industry, called armaflex. Very soft and resiliant. Comes in either 1/2 or 3/4 inches thickness. Buddy who shoots long range centerfire matches swears by the stuff. I've cut up a peice that will fit under my coat, and I've cleaned the Omega, so back to the range I go.

Smokemaker,
Actually, I'm over here in Wilson. :p
Just talked to one brother, he's not sure about the Tier yet. My other brother's in-laws have a farm over on Townline Rd., in between Newfane and Barker. May end up over there.
Is the guy on the corner of W. Somerset still open? Someone told me he carried BP at one time, but then I heard he closed up. I've been working to many hours to get over there and check.
Good luck with the Omega. Buddy of mine has one; good gun.

Heck, it happens. I suppose that's the matchlock advantage. Run out of matches, and you've got Winstons/Camels/Marlborough/Pall Malls/Lucky Stike/Generic White, etc. Cigarettes can be hazardous to your health.

The guy in appleton is no longer open... Deerlick it was called. He used to be the go to guy for my family for BP, but he was sick of the store, and the government made it all but impossible to keep true black powder there, so he gave it up. Anyhow, I went up to north forest gun club and shot a whole lot better today. :) Sometimes I think a change in venue helps the shooting some, and what do ya' know, no flinches! Plus, my uncle who went with shot his .45 Omega just as good. So now I can say with confidence I'm ready to hammer one!
