I haven't been active on this board for a long time, been busy, sorry.

Anyway, today was wierd as all hell and just a little scary.

I went for a drive in my parents sports car this afternoon, and in the process drove past my girlfriends crazy ex boyfriend. He knows that I drive that car and he slowed down and gave me an evil look. I didn't think much of it until later.

Fast foreward to around 9pm, my girlfriend B(who loves guns by the way) is over at my house and we are in the process of baking a cake when I hear a wierd tapping, like knuckles on a 2x4. We are the only ones in the house, and no one was supposed to be outside, so I became curious. I stopped and listened, and afterwards resumed baking. A few seconds later, i heard it again, this time B heard it too. I went over to the window and looked outside, the motion sensor lights had not kicked on or anything, but still the tapping resumed. These were not settling noises because I'm familiar with those in my house. As a precaution, I went back and grabbed the AR15 and my Mossberg 500 and put them in my room, where we went to talk for a while(so we'd be away from the bigger windows). Later, while talking and relaxing, we hear the tapping again, this time sounding like its right outside my window. I open the shutters but see nothing, so I closed the shutters and the drapes and went over to my darkened parents room. I looked out their window to check if i could see if someone was crouched below my window, but I saw no one. B and I discussed a plan of defense if something happened, and thought nothing of the noises, which stopped shortly afterwards.

Fast foreward to around 11pm. I took B home and went back to my house. I got locked out and while I was in the process of getting back into my house, B called me telling me of something scary that happened while she was in her kennel with her dogs. While feeding her dogs, the doorknob on her kennel turned very slowly like someone was trying to get in. The door didn't open but it still scared her. She described it as if a small child who could not operate the doorknob very well was trying to open the door. At first she thought one of her dogs had gotten loose and was chewing on the knob, but none of them had. The motion sensor light in the front of the kennel was off. She got back to her house ok.

I don't know if any of these incidents are related, ,maybe I'm overreacting here but I'm worried about her If you want drawings of the kennel to suggest a security setup, please ask. Any ideas are welcome.

By the way, if you are going to reprimand me on why I "needed" to get out an AR15 for just a little noise, save your breath and don't post please. Its the gun I feel the most comfortable and well trained with.

Here is an ms paint of the yard. Brown boxes are doghouses with dogs, brown circles are trees. Everything is surrounded by brush and woods, as indicated by the green. The kennel and the house are a solid 45-50 yard walk apart. The motion sensor light's range of motion is shown with the black lines. The door has a lock and a peephole but she can't see out it at night. The first thing i probably am going to do is put another sensor light right above the door. The kennel has no phone as far as i know. Thats all that i can think of as of now.

I cant stop laughing. I'm sorry I know your situation worrys you, but that was too damn funny.

How old are you? Can you or your girl obtain a CCW?

Could the tapping sound have been the oven heating up? I know mine makes tapping or clicking sounds as it gets up to temperature.

My oven does that same thing when its heating up and when its going too.

Maybe we have found the culprit? Turn on your oven for a bit and see if the tapping starts up again.

What sort of dogs does she keep? Part of the solution might be a crazy-ex-boyfriend hating big dog that is not locked into a kennel.

Don't feel you were odd or whatnot for getting your AR and a shotgun...

sometimes you have to remember that while our "modern" instincts are shuffled to the back of our heads - they are still there and sometimes push through to the forfront.. making our neck hairs raise...

There is a reason those instincts are still there - because your brain has put together a puzzle that modern life says doesn't happen (but does)

Every once and again mine does that same thing and there is "suddenly" a Taurus tracker in .357 mag very close at hand.....

J/Tharg!

No laughter here--especially the part about the doorknob turning.

Things to do, in order:

1. G/F gets an order of protection against the ex, RIGHT NOW.

2. Consider arming G/F, if you haven't done so already.

3. Do a little bit of research into a CCTV setup. For a few bucks, you can get a camera set up to cover the important parts. For a few more, you can equip your house with some IR lighting that will be invisible at night, but through the eyes of a good B/W camera, it will be like high noon.

4. Tell G/F to keep a cell phone on her at all times. Be prepared to call the police ASAP if it happens again.

i like baking cakes in the middle of the night too ;)

I would recommend if possible to manually turn on the lights outside at any time you plan on going out after dark.
Turn on lights, observe then perform tasks armed if possible.
Also is there a light that is directed away from the house?
The light at the kennel if directed at the house could actually be more of a hinderance.
There are some KISS anti intrusion devices that can be used, example, trip wires made to activate cyalumes, aluminum cans tied to a trip wire etc....easy, economical and effective if used right....

Check the motion sensors and the lightbulbs. Make sure the sensors aren't dirty or worn out. Make sure the bulbs aren't burned out.
If both are working then change the angle of the sensors if possible... en ex- may know where the blind spots are located.

1) Is the kennel a solid shed type of structure, that is to say are the windows and doors the only means of observation/entry?

2) What's the range from the rear of the kennel to the brush line? How high & deep is that brush line? What is on the other side of the line at the rear of the yard? Estimated dimmensions of kennel and back yard?

3) Like another post said, what type of dogs are housed in the kennel?

4) What is the dog crate and what are its dimmensions?

"You're travelling to another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound...but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land, whose boundaries are only that of the imagination...you're entering...the Twilight Zone..."

Which caliber?

The kennel is a solid shed, four sturdy walls. Windows the only means of observation, doors are solid wood and metal with no windows on them.

The range from the rear of the kennel to the brush line is about 10 feet, the brush is anywhere from 2-8 feet high, many trees and bushes. It isn't terribly thick, but it is thick enough for someone to hide in. The rear of the yard is just woods for a long ways. Backyard dimensions are about 75x75 yards approximate. Kennel dimensions are about 30x20 feet. I'll get a detailed kennel drawing later

Sadly she keeps coonhounds that probably wouldn't hurt a fly.

Dog crate is probably 5x7feet and is on a platform about 3 feet off the ground.

No CCW yet, still not old enough.

Thanks,

I reccomend you be a gentleman and give her a nice gift,
hmmm, how about a used shotty to keep in the Kennel? ;)

It doesnt have to be expensive, and if she doesnt own any firearms
herself, or doesnt have one hidden in the kennel, I'd buy her one.

Inexpensive security: I have a porch light at front, and one at each corner of the house at back. The bulbs cost about $15 bucks each, use 15 watts but give out the equivalent of 40 Watts light and last about eight years. In addition, your GF might want to consider a bright security post light installed by the electric company... as you probably know, the BG's stay away from well-lit houses/areas.

If it's what you are most comfortable and trained with, why would you grab anything else?

Makes sense to me!

I've had on again/ off again problems with my ppk- I've been know to grab my p22! Now THAT'S nuts.... :D

I'd only 'reprimand' you if there had been a 30.'06 BAR available, and you chose the .223.

If he needs to be shot, he needs to shot A LOT.

Keeping in mind I have never seen the physical site, I modified your drawing with a few basic suggestions. By moving a few objects in the yard, you can provide a clearer view of the topography surrounding the kennel. Relocate the one light you showed to prevent degrading the night vision of your girlfriend as she approaches the kennel while continuing to cast some light on the door area. I would add 2-3 more light sources. Clear out as much of that brush line as possible, at least the bush type material and leafy vegetation. I'd strive for at least an additional 10-15 feet of depth for the 40-50 feet parallel to the kennel.

This is spur of the moment rough draft type stuff, but it should give you a couple of ideas. Any dog tied up in the yard would be prone to vocally challenge trespassers as well.

That's good - but while you're at it, I'd add a second light on the other corner at back of house.... a high post light will illuminate the entire area.
