CHICAGO - A gunman shot four people and took a hostage in a downtown skyscraper Friday, then was killed after police fired at him, authorities said.

The shootings in the 38-story Citigroup Center, which also houses a train station, sent office workers running from the building and stranded rush-hour commuters.
Sorry to hear about the victims.

This is all a lie!

There is no way that anyone was shot or shot at in Chicago. As we all know guns are illegal in Chicago, and criminals ALWAYS OBEY THE LAW! So this is all hype made up by the news media to promote more gun control! (Sarcasm mode is now off!):fire:

They will likely say the evil guns came from outside the city where gun laws are lax and try to push for legislation restricting those who don't live in Chicago.

Not even the politicians who push these bans believe they work. It's just that what really needs to be done is politically unfeasible.

It's just that what really needs to be done is politically unfeasible.

A mandated minimum of one handgun and one rifle per (non-felon) household?

That would be a very good start, if implemented nationally.

Not even that. All you have to do is decriminalize behaviors that primarily harm only the person that engages in them, and concentrate on putting the violent offenders that are directly harming others into prison forever.

Behaviors that primarily harm only those that do them, you mean drugs?

Drugs are equally harmless and harmful depending on the expertise of the user, they do however lead to a lack of productivity and a predilection to crimes such as theft, prostitution and fraud.
Not usually associated with legal gun ownership.

they do however lead to a lack of productivity

Not my problem. They do that, they get fired and make room for someone who is productive.

and a predilection to crimes such as theft, prostitution and fraud.

Wrong, that's a personal choice they make. And if they make the choice to attack or steal from other people, thus violating their rights AS people, they need to be punished for it and put in prison.

Simple.

You mean someone got hurt with a handgun where handguns are banned?!
Need tougher gun laws, nationwide.

Complete ban on all guns except single shots and double barrel shotguns, and owners of those need to supply fingerprints, complete family background check, retina scan, DNA sample, and a 30 unit course on safety available at the local (anti gun) college. The course must require the use of book A.____ B.____ C.____ D._____ all published by the state which incidentaly cost around $100 each. Then owner must provide a $50,000 liability insurance policy to cover potential accidents involving the firearm. This will allow a temporary permit for the user to store the firearms in a state approved safe, locked and unloaded. This is an annual permit, and is subject to review at any time. Furthermore all police and state agents are completely exempt from this policy.

Finaly we will live in peace.

...(a few years later) we hearby propose a ban on all knives over 1.5 inches long carried outside of the home, and a ban on knives with sharp points unless your involved in an occupation granting an exemption while engaged in a profitable tax revenue producing activity.

...(some years later) In an effort to cut down on escalating crime we propose a ban on walking canes, weighted purses, chains, coin currency totaling more than $5 or more than 20 pieces whichever is greater, anything previously identified as a weapon, or anything not on the approved list of civilian allowable personal artifacts that could potential be used as a weapon.

In light of the growing violent crime problem we are upgrading the protection offered to our officers and state agents tasked with providing for your safety. These tools will help insure your safety in these times of insecurity by giving officers the firepower necessary to counter increasingly dangerous threats.

Glass bottles, glass mugs, and any glass vessel designed or redesigned to be used as a drinking vessel in a public place is punishable by fine and/or imprisonment not to exceed 6 months in the county jail for each offense and the revocation of the liqor license of offenders.

Finaly you are free to safely enjoy freedom, do not stray too far from police, watchtowers, or surveillance added for your protection. Avoid lawbreakers and those choosing to carry weapons in violation of the law.

Perhaps we can use this. Similar to how people in Texas got their CCW law past. If we had one person willing to say that they would have been able to carry their gun with them that they would not have to watch their family and friends die at the hands of a gunmen.

I believe one of their legislators testified and helped to get CCW enabled. But I doubt this will happen in IL. I fear it will be used to help tighten gun control laws and disarm us even more.

I fear more gun control now. As I said in the other thread... perhaps we could turn this into our Lubies massacre and get someone to say that had they been packing they could have saved someones life. But I doubt that.

CHICAGO - Carrying a cache of weapons into a bustling downtown office, a gunman chained a law firm's doors closed and fatally shot three people before a police sniper killed him as held a hostage at gunpoint, authorities said.

The standoff at the 43-story Citigroup Center, which also houses a train station, sent office workers fleeing and stranded commuters Friday as the work week drew to a close.

Police entered through another door in the U-shaped law office, and a SWAT officer shot the gunman from about 45 yards away, Police Superintendent Phil Cline said.

There were no negotiations and the hostage was unharmed, police said.

Cline said the gunman carried a revolver, knife and hammer in a large manila envelope and had security escort him to the Wood, Phillips, Katz, Clark & Mortimer office on the 38th floor.

The gunman didn't work in the office but demanded to see one of the victims, police said.

"He was not employed there, but we feel he did have previous encounters with the individuals in that office," Cline said.

Neither the victims, all men, nor the gunman were identified. A fourth victim, a woman, was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the foot, but was released Friday night, said Kim Waterman, a Rush University Medical Center spokeswoman.

Wood Phillips specializes in patent and intellectual property law, according to its Web site.

A partner at the firm, Stephen D. Geimer, declined comment when reached at home by telephone Friday night.

Fire officials said they received reports of shots fired on the 38th floor around 3:15 p.m. There were about 30 people on the floor, they said.

The shooter "grabbed a hostage and he was pointing a gun alternately at the hostage's head and his own head," Cline said.

Cindy Penzick, secretary in a law firm on the 37th floor, said that after a co-worker told her she heard gunshots, a police officer with his gun drawn on their floor yelled at them to get out.

Penzick said she is usually calm, "but I have to tell you this was scary as hell."

People hurried down the escalators and ran from the skyscraper on the west side of downtown.

Keegan Greene, who works at Verizon Wireless on the first floor, was helping a customer when fire alarms began going off.

"One of the security guards came up to us and started saying, "Run, run, run, run, run!" Greene said.

Service on the Metra commuter line was suspended for more than an hour and area buses were diverted while the incident unfolded. Metra spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet said all Metra crew members had been locked into secure areas before train service resumed just after 5 p.m.

Janet Buswell, an office manager on the 25th floor, said her staff learned of the incident when emergency flashers went off and they were told over building speakers to secure their offices and let no one in or out.

"It was a little tense, when you don't know what's going on," said Buswell, of RBC Dain Rauscher Inc. "Of course this is the train station building, so there's always the fear that could be targeted."

Did anyone else notice the parts I put in bold? A hammer, a knife, and a revolver are a cache of weapons? And not only that but security escorted him there? I cant believe this.

Cache of weapons?

Gee...a Revolver, a knife, a hammer, and a manilla envelope.....wow!!

Aren't there any "sensible controlls" on those manilla envelopes? And hammers..!! Why, any nutberger can buy a hammer at any hardware store and murder a bunch of defenseless.......

Something has to be done and it needs to be done now!

I propose a sensible licensing system... and a background check... and a waiting period. A waiting period has that "cooling off" effect, you know...

The media doesn't really understand, everything is "a cache." If anyone on this board ever had a serious arrest it would be "an armory" of weapons. Most journalists consider double-digit number of guns to be something only a man bent on conquering the continent would possess.

What a sniper too, 45 yard shot. Don't let him go to Perry or he'll just ruin ot for everyone else.

IN the AP story they said he had a cache of weapons. Then later in the story the weapons turned out to be one revolver, a hammer and knife. So I think we need all hammers registered!! He was also escorted into the building by the buildings rent a cops.

One guy with one little .38 snubby manages to shoot four people unopposed, and cause an entire skyscraper to evacuate in panic, as well as a transit hub to shut down.

There's your result of "gun control" laws, clear as day.

Perhaps we can use this.
Nah, probably not, at least not there.

You can be sure that somebody will chime in with some comment about "CCW heroes" and how they'll just shoot EVERYBODY.

They'll tell you that it's better to have a concentrated bunch of unarmed victims like this case and the LIRR shootings. Besides, if you talk about self-defense, anti-gunners will think you're a "hick" or a "klansman". Better to be an urbane, witty... and bullet riddled bon vivant...
