I went gun shopping today and got to witness a bit of excitement. I was looking for a SA in .357mag so I went to a few different dealers. While at one of them a guy came in and was asking alot of questions about background checks. The kind that make me pretty nervous. After he was there like 2-3 minutes one of the employees went over to the one he was talking to and wispered something to them. They both then told the guy he would have to leave. Which he did. A couple minutes later another guy comes in with this guy right behind him and they walk over to the wall with the holsters and the employees start to act a little agitated. Like they do not know how to confront these guys. This seemed odd to me so I decided to leave. I don't get more than two steps outside the door and three patrol cars pull up and all the officers go inside. I sit in my car just out of curiosity and just a few minutes later here they come with both guys cuffed and stick them in the car and off they go. not sure what was going on but the first employee must have triggered an alarm the second he saw the first guy for the police to have gotten there that fast.

You would be amazed at some of the creatures who sometimes walk into a gun shop, and no, I'm not talking about the way they dress or their hair length. A good friend of mine owns a gunshop in suburban Dallas, and has been targeted more than once by people of ill repute. Mainly, they're trying to rob him or worse.

One summer's evening, he had closed up the shop and was walking out with his grade school aged daughter-some jerk tried to grab his kid. Bad guy got a real close up look at the wrong end of a 45, and the police hauled him away.

At my last purchase, I think I observed a "straw" purchase. Two individuals were looking at a S&W 45 semi-auto (not sure which one), one with a permit one without. The funny thing was is the guy without the permit was doing ALL the fondling of the pistol. :what: I found this out as they were checking out, the guy with the permit (you have to have a permit in CT ro purchase a pistol) puts the pistol on layaway with the non-permit guy STILL fondling the pistol! They leave and hear the two clerks talking back and forth about being nervous that only one guy had a permit and the other guy was holding it all the time. The clerks really could not do too much since they figure the guy who put the pistol on layaway will probably not pick it up. Scary part is that these two individuals live less than 5 miles from me!

My small, local gun shop is next door to a pawn shop which is frequently not open. There are some 'strange creatures' who wander in looking for the pawn shop owner and who wander in thinking the gun shop IS the pawn shop.

Not sure about evolution of mankind descending from the apes, but I'm quite sure that evolution is taking mankind BACK to ape-hood in many instances!

One shop I go to keeps their door locked. They buzz you in. If they don't like your looks, your not getting in. The range I go to, my wife said the people always look a little on edge. Well, they have good reason. You don't know what's going to walk thru the door.

There was a situation sort of like that at my regular gun shop. A thug was looking at a pearl handled Bersa. He was pointing it at everyone, mock rapid firing it sideways (gangsta style), and dropped it twice. The lady there asked for it back, as if she were going to show him something on it. Once she got the gun she put it back in the case and quietly asked him to leave. He began to get real loud and huffed: "Why, I want to get something I can carry around! Let me see that again!" And he was making a scene and making big arm movements. She just said something to the effect that they couldn't help him and he left mumbling curses at her.
Its morons like that which gives responsible gun owners a bad name.

Outside of my full time job I have worked at a gun shop/firing range for 13 years. We pack heat to keep the critters away. We were the only shop in the area packing heat until all the others got robbed. Now they are all packing heat. Go figure.

The best one we had is when we drew down on a cop and almost busted a cap in his butt. He walks in in plain clothes with a dirty look on his face looking around. He was standing behind the holster rack and kept opening holster packages and then opening his jacket. We thought that he was taking the holsters out and stuffing them in his jacket. All the while he is glaring at us. All we can see is his head and shoulders. All of a sudden he reaches in his jacket and yanks out a .45. No badge, no nothing. We grabbed our guns. The cop almost pooped himself. "I'm a cop, I'm a cop, don't shoot, look it's unloaded!!!" He flipped the mag well towards us so that we could see that there was no mag and he opened the slide. He then came over to the counter holding the gun by the muzzle and set the gun on the counter while getting his ID out. We told him why we almost capped him and he apologized profusely. He explained the dirty look as that of a tough cop. He said that you have to look tough and explained his looking around when he came in as a cop thing to see who is there. He was staring at us wondering why we were eyeballing him. He had unloaded his gun outside so that he could try on holsters. This explained his activity behind the holster rack. He ended up spending over $200 at the shop that night.

I knew when this guy came in that something was up. My boss at the time would smoke a cigarette down to the filter. When this guy walked in Joe smashed his half smoked cigarette out in an ash tray. LOL!

Obviously not a very experienced or intelligent cop, either.

He should have known his actions practially screamed, "SHOOT ME NOW!" :p

I know a bit about guns ... I've had friends who don't know much but want to buy a gun.

There's been a couple occasions where I went with a friend, they pick put a gun, I inspect the gun and then recommended they buy or not buy.

I wonder if that looked like a straw purchase :uhoh:

He explained the dirty look as that of a tough cop.

Nope. It was the look of a guy who thinks that his badge makes him special, and above the rest. Natural born bully.

Heh... The other night, while walking down the street to pick up the van, I am passing the local akkido self-defense emporium, and I noticed a guy with enough tacticrap on his decent sized belt get out of a marked up tacticruiser 4x4, walk over to your basic vanilla crown vic, get something/put something away. He then walks back past the tacticruiser, and notices that I'm reading the stuff on the back.

I get the evil eye, and he asks "can I help you?" You _know_ that's not what he meant...

I reply "Hey, I didn't even know that St. Charles County had its own Emergency Management Department."

I get back eviler eye, and the "can I help you" again, and I reply with "Nope, just saw all the writing on the truck, and wondered what it was for." More evil eye, and he wandered, gut first, into the akkido parlor...

So, you know what? I don't like the evil eye. I'm going to make it a hobby to see just what the St. Charles County Emergency Management Department actually does, how many employees are actually doing it, and just why we should continue to pay someone to do something that's probably the job of the police or fire departments.

I was at a gun show right after the...

hurricane hit NO. There were a couple real homie guys buying an AK from one table. The dealer was sweating bullets while on the phone doing the background check. I bet he "knew" it was a straw purchase.

Cops try to give me the "evil eye, holier than thou" looks but you can see in their eyes that it won't hold water as I am a 250 lb 6 ft world class powerlifter........hehehe.......chris3

Was in one of the local shops a couple of years ago. A gang-banger type came in and asked to use the range. He asked for targets, ammo, etc.

The clerk then asked where his gun was.

The guy reached under his coat and pulled it from his waistband.

The clerk told him to leave, which he did (big sigh of relief on the part of all who were there).

The local PD decided to have an undercover officer stake the place out for a couple of days to see if the guy would come back.

He did. And he'd only been out of prison for a week.

He went right back to prison.

I was at a large department store that sells guns. I am looking at a S&W Model 29, short barrel.
Some thug guy comes in acting very nervouce. He asks to look at a 357 revolver in the case. The young girl gets it out, and he starts fooling with it. He then asks her for some ammo for it to see how well it fits in the gun. I braced myself to un arm this clown. The lady tells him no at least 4 times. but he keeps it up. She finally asks for the gun back, and the guy gives it to her and he leaves. I told her that I was glad she did not give it to him and that if she had I would have had to try to disarm him. She thanked me for looking out for her, and I bought the 44 and left. If the 44 had a bigger barrel I could have pistol whipped him, ha, ha!
You just never know what situation that you may run into.

Basically when someone who can legally own a firearm purchases one with the intent to give it or sell it to someone who is not legal to own the firearm. I'm sure there is a more thorough explaination out there, but that's the $0.02 version:D

The reason I ask is cause im 20 years old and i have been going crazy over the 21 handgun laws. I only fueled the fire by buying a new rem870 and tacticooling it out and such..ive had my eyes on the new XD-45acp since it came out...is there any legal and responsible way for my older brother to purchase it for me and 'give' it to me???

is there any legal and responsible way for my older brother to purchase it for me and 'give' it to me???

I doubt there is a legal way to do this...

However, I did ask a lawyer friend of mine the other day if it would be possible for me to in any way buy a gun for my nephew that he can then have as his own when he turns 21 but still be able to shoot it until then when he is with his grandfather. he said he woud have to look into it but believed that as long as I am not asking for any money in return for the gun I can gift it to his grandfather with the condition that it be given to my nephew when he comes of age. he said i would just have to draw up a legal document to state this even though i trust my step-father to give it to him.

It depends on your state. If there are no laws to the contrary, then yes, your brother could give you a handgun. But, he has to actually give it to you, as an honest-to-goodness gift, after paying for it with his own money. I don't believe you can give him the money to buy the handgun for you.

As always, Internet advice is worth the price you pay. ;)

What was it about him having his gun in the waistband that got him asked to leave by the clerk at the range?

Just to clarify the straw purchase rule, you must be the actual purchaser of the gun, which means it is for you or a gift to someone else. If you are purchasing the gun for someone else and they will pay you for it, it is a straw purchase. It doesn't matter whether the other person is legally able to own a firearm or not.

Thug with a gun in the waistband? Thats someone who shouldnt have a gun.

just need to vent, stupidest law on the books?? what cant i do with a shotgun than with a handgun illegally???a 'bullet' is a bullet, intent is intent- btw, im very liberal- but not on gun control
