And my wife called it in! I had a fall either sex tag, so we took a little drive up to an area known to hold the grand birds. The *first* place we came to I saw one just off the road! It ran off, so we drove around some and came back to that location a couple hours later. Parked about 100yds down creek from where we saw it. Snuck down to the creek, hid, and my wife started calling with the new slate call I bought this morning. I was thinking to myself, "It'll be a miracle if those noises work...."
Now, this must be total beginner's luck. We're in our street clothes, her with a call she's never used, and me with my 12 gauge. Within a minute of calling, the bird starts calling back! Sounded pretty far away, likely around 100yds up stream where we drove by it earlier in the day. Neither of us could beleive it when the calls started getting closer! There we sat, hunkered down behind a big fallen tree. About 5 minutes later... a big bird with a thick blue & red head comes strutting around the corner about 20 yards in front of my muzzle... BANG!
I still can't beleive it. My wife is still lamenting over being an accessory in luring the bird in. But, from the hill to the grill, we're about to have some tasty turkey meat! We gathered up our prize and walked back to the truck. Right about that time a Ranger pulled in to check my tag, which was of course in order. "Nice bird!" he said.
