You have your opinion but have failed to show proof that flutes are necessary.

I wasn't trying to show that they were "necessary", simply that they have a function ... there's a difference. A muzzle brake on a rifle has a function, but is it necessary? A flashlight on an AR-15 has a function but is it necessary? Are you omniscient and able to separate function from need for the rest of us? We can beat this thing to death but flutes reduce weight and reduce the contact area between the bolt and receiver ... FACT!! Are these two features necessary ... maybe, maybe not, we can decide for ourselves ... but it's still a function resulting from a feature. Many firearms designs try to reduce the contact area between the bolt/bolt carrier and the receiver to reduce friction. Some designs take into consideration that dirt/dust can cause reliability issues so address it in some way or another.

And is it really necessary to make this statement?

Re read your post Shirley

You need to re read your post. Your the one who was ranting about opinions and failure to show proof. I simply commented and then simply repeated your comment that you made to me. Flutes have there place. But you went on the holy grail about there importance and reason to have them and basically insulting any one that didn't agree with you. I think they are used more as a sales gimmick for custom builders now a days to separate you from your money. Marlin XL7, under $400 with a fluted bolt ...damn good rifle for the price.

You are entitled to your opinion, but 1858 has respect as a wise one on the board, and I can't say the same for you.. so.. Hmm, I think fluting is cool, it looks cool, it reduces surface contact, and DOES give dirt a place to slide if the reciever is dirty while cycling the bolt.. Odds are you don't have one.. I don't but I might one day.

I would just add that design features to aid reliability and prevent ingress of foreign material in bolt action rifles, are different than cosmetic flutes or cuts in a bolt. In the AI, there are a bunch of design features that together help it run very reliably even in icy/dirty environments.

But am I not also entitled to my opinion? Yet most of the things I have to say are best kept in my mind... Just because you think something doesn't mean you need to say it, and it must be a bummer to be more immature than a 14 year old.
