I have a friend that owns a concrete construction company that easily makes half a million a year. He has a Barrett m107 that he absolutely loves that was stolen a few weeks back. Well, obviously there aren't many m107s running about my town so when this 18 year old kid shows up to shoot it at the range and tries to shoot it while standing up, everyone at the range knows that one has been stolen so the cops are immediately called about it. It took a whole two days for this really dumb kid to get caught. Sad thing was that he dropped it when he fired it cause it knocked him on his butt or so I was told. They are built well so nothing was wrong with it but its still a $10,000 gun that should not be dropped.

I just thought I would share the story.

Well, it's a happy ending. Unfortunately, it's not very often anyone ever sees their guns again after a theft. That's just..well, shocking.. that someone would take a locally stolen gun to a local range.

Criminals aren't generally known to be too smart.

Because, if they're smart, they aren't 'known' as criminals. Take the President and Vice President, for example. Or anyone on Wall Street.

Don't forget lawyers:neener::D:D:p

Good that he got it back. If i had one, i would soooo angry if it got stolen......for that matter, where did he have it? It is not that easy to conceal one of those things.:D

TWEEEEEEETTT!!!

Flag on the play!

Illegal shift!

Stolen Barrett does NOT equal George W. Bush sucks!

Five yard penalty! First down!

And this also is a great story from the standpoint of the "gun grabbers".

So much for criminals using the .50's in crimes eh? More likely to break their own shoulders than hurt anyone else with the things.

Dropping a Barret should not hurt it in away other than Cosmetically and the Scope. Think about it this way, Soldiers need to Shoot, Move, and Communicate. I dout there is one GI that has one in a Nice gun case, shoots it every Now and then, and when he does shoot it he is in a covered range at a Table.

Battle scars, Now he has a story to tell about his Barret.:)

I think the main thing to consider in this story is why was a $10K gun left somewhere where it could be stolen? If you have $10K to drop on a gun, you'd think the guy would spend $1000 on a safe.

I would be curious to know details of how the rifle was appropriated by the kid (allegedly), and what the charges are? Is a burglary 1 involved?

Boy, you got that straight! Espec. the part about wall street. Gvnwst, I'm gonna have to hurt ya..... :p

must have been a big bloke to even attempt to fire it from the shoulder

Or just really dumb ;)

Glad to hear your friend got his rifle back.

I cannot stand a man that will not work to get what he wants..
Hope he is punished to the fullest extent of the law.

I've fired a buddy's bolt (AR50) gun from the shoulder many times...yes it's a big round and gun but the recoil is hardly enough to knock someone down. The hardest thing is holding it up long enough to get a good sight picture.

No offense, but I am going to have to remind everyone the story from a friend would be better if officialy mentioned.
A story from a friend of a friend are great, and they usualy take on new dimensions over a few beers.

That is not to say it didn't happen exactly as you describe, but a few elements just line up perfectly for a story.

Many people can shoot them from the shoulder. They kick less than many 12 gauge slugs (from a 7-8 pound shotgun) from a 30+ pound rifle.

The recoil from the semi-auto Barrett is 36 foot pounds.
The recoil of a 3" magnum 12 gauge shotgun slug from your average shotgun (7-8 pounds) is over 50 foot pounds.

I posted this here: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=409964

The difference is not many people own the expensive rifle so it starts to take on all these mythical properties. Properties like tossing people on thier butt if they fire it standing.

That gun weighs close to the weight of the Barrett (little more), both have an effective muzzle break, and the one you shot is bolt action while the semi-auto action actualy absorbs even more of the felt recoil.
So the recoil is very similar.

Yep.

My buddy is one of those smart but criminal lawyers (I am too, for that matter) and had a Barrett. It was a pussycat to shoot from the bench, much nicer than my .300 WinMag. The muzzle blast destroyed the screens in between benches though, so .50 BMG is now banned at the range. Sadly, my buddy sold his Barrett. I miss shooting his $5 per round ammo:) IF I had wanted to shoulder a 30 pound rifle, I doubt it would have knocked me back. I say IF . . . they come with a bipod for a reason.
