Base/Ring Height Calculation Question

I need some help making sure I get the right ring height. I've got a Savage 114 .30-06 w/ Accu Trigger and round receiver mounts. I have a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40mm scope that says it has an Obj. Clear Aperture height of 1.6" (41mm).

I'm assuming I need a base + ring height of .8" or 21mm to have the scope clear the receiver.

I'm looking at Burris 1" Signature Standard Rings Matte Mediumthat indicate a Ring Height: .270" (measured from base of ring to bottom of scope tube). Since the scope is a one inch scope, I'm adding .5" to that to calculate that I know have .77" of clearance. I'm looking at Burris 2-Piece Trumount Standard Scope Base Savage 10 Through 16, 110 Through 116 Round Rear Matte base, but don't know the height of the base.

Is it safe to assume that my calculations above are the correct way to go about this?

Thanks,
Jason

savage 10 rifle mounting burris 42 mm scope

how do I find correct scope rings for burris 4.5X14 42 mm scope on Savage 10 rifle?

to have the scope clear the receiver
It's not the receiver you need to worry about.
It's the objective bell clearing the barrel.

And after 50 years of mounting scopes?
I still don't know of any way to figure it out short of trying low rings first.
If they don't clear, you go to medium rings and try that.

There is no Standard among all the scope manufactures as to how big the outside housing is for a 40mm lens.
p
Or how high a low, med, or high ring is compared to every barrel diameter ever made by every rifle manufacture.

All I know for sure is you want to mount the scope as low & close to the barrel as you can.

Unfortunately, my experience agrees with rc. If you luck out, sometimes Leupold or one of the others will have your exact setup in their table, but it only works for that exact setup.

It's a decent starting point for other setups, though. And, as long as you don't have a heavy (non- or slightly- tapered) barrel, low often works on 40mm objectives. That's where I'd start.

Low rings will work with this combo and what I'd use. .77" clearance is a lot more than I'd want. Some like their scopes mounted higher and would prefer mediums. No reason at all to go with taller mounts

Starting low makes sense. Some people though have an unusually long face from cheek to eye and might get a more comfortable cheekweld with the next size up.
