I'm in the market for a boyds laminate stock for a savage axis heavy barrel and got to talking to a buddy. He said I should glass bed and maybe pillar bed the stock but my fear is we do that and it will make it worse and cant be fixed.

any suggestions?

Before thinking about bedding any rifle it should be loaded for and see how good you can get the rifle to group. Different powders, primers, bullets and loading components and only once everything has been tried would I worry about bedding. When done correctly with time and patience the accuracy can be improved but you need to ask yourself if the time, effort and cost are worth it? I have never seen a rifle suffer from a good bedding job. I also do not recommend bedding a rifle until one has a good understanding of what bedding is all about. Should you decide bedding is what you want Brownell's offers a good range of bedding kits and supplies.

^^YUP!^^, as it is with so many things, doing a good job is the key. If you can state that it will be done correctly, go for it. It's a job with a bit more consideration then first meets the eye. Its easy to screw up and hard to fix. In my gun smith class this is an art I've been working on. Luckily, my instructor is not only meticulous but a fine teacher. I know I would have made a mess out of this without guidance. Without known performance, you'll never know what change you've made. Last, it won't fix a really bad problem. If the gun is shooting 5" groups don't expect sub MOA with bedding. [Extreme example].

I can hit the top bulls eyes with the factory set up at 100yards so the gun shoots fine.

I guess if I don't need to bed it then I wont. I'm only using it for a 200-300yard bench and varmint gun. Im afraid the guy will mess up the bedding job and im out a stock.

When a gun shoots fine rule #1 is don't screw with it. Life is good and be happy. :)

Do a search on your question. "Bedding a rifle stock."

U-Tube has an Audio/video on the subject. As do others.
