Call me old fashioned, but along with other stuff the closest thing next to my bed a bolt action rifle. I just seem to be paranoid after being shot at many times, and weapon mal functions, thanks to M4, that I can only really trust bolt action with good ammo. So my question is how many of you keep it bedside, and what caliber?

As much as I trust bolt actions, I trust an AK/SKS or a pump shotgun just as much, and either would be more useful for bedside defense, IMHO.

no, and i don't see myself going that route anytime in the future either. my bedside setup is much like MCgunner's

1. S&W 586
2. short-barreled 12g SxS

On/Off bedside gun I have is a No.5 mk1 jungle carbine. the .303 british round should be more than sufficient for HD. I keep 9 in the magazine with an empty chamber.

Bayonet? A bayonet would almost kinda sorta make it kinda make some sense. I just think that shotguns and pistols are bedside guns, bolt action rifles are all of the downside of a rifle in close quarters, with none of the benefits regarding speed of deployment.

I voted "yes," but it's not bedside, exactly. It's an M44 Mosin that I can grab on the way out of my bedroom. Directly at hand are a 9mm pistol and a 12 gauge shotgun.

The reason the rifle stays loaded is because there are feral dogs and coyote packs here. I keep the chamber empty. It's for canines, and that's all it's for.

Sure really glad I don't live next door, or across the street from you!

Bolt actions have been very reliable for me, but then so have my semi-autos.

I don't think I trust myself to competently run a bolt action under stress in the middle of the night.

My nightstand gun is the same semi-auto pistol I carry all day.

All I can say is, the incredibly tiny edge a bolt-action may have in reliability over a decent AR-15 is completely offset in my mind by the superior handling, capacity, and speed of an M4gery.

I keep an XD45 on the nightstand and hidden beside the nightstand is now a mini-14 with a 30 round mag. My XD45 has never once jammed on me after around 2k rounds now, I keep it nice and clean at all times as it is my carry weapon.

I keep a mossy 500 loaded with #1 buck beside the bed and a Glock 21 on the nightstand.

I have 3 children and the wife, plus neighbors on all sides. Over penetration with a rifle round would be a BIG problem and concern for me even with the .223 or 7.62 X 39. Now an 9mm AR carbine might have some serious usefulness, but probably not better than my 12 gauge...

Thought provoking thread!

THANKS!

Tom

For those of you who keep long-guns in your bedroom, are they secured in any manner? Same question goes for pistols and revolvers I guess, although these are much easier to secure in a bedside table drawer, small cipher-lock safe, etc.

For the record, I think a bedside bolt gun is a relatively terrible idea, and my last choice if I also had the option of a handgun, shotgun, or semi-auto rifle. If I had no other choice, then bolt gun is better than nothing. To each his own though :)

Hello,

I hope you don't mind me picking on you for a moment.

I'm assuming we're all adults here. I see on various boards holier-than-though members, usually new members or members with few posts, pop up and ask how people store their firearms, in threads which are not about that subject.

Maybe it's me, but I don't understand... I guess what I'm saying is, I don't get it. I'm a grown man, and I don't figure it's anybody else's business whether I keep a firearm by my bed, or loaded, leaning against the door, or in the closet, or in a safe.

If it's a legit question and you're really not looking to play holier-than-thou, why not start a new thread instead of hijacking someone else's?

Normally I do mind, unless the picking-on is in good humor. But I'll just go along with it this time to humor you. Be warned though: expect to be treated much like you treat others. ;)

I'm guilty of thread-creep -- no doubt about that. Though I did also address the OP's question. It's possible that I'm holier-than-thou -- but let's wait until we get to know each other a little better before coming to that conclusion, ok? :neener: Also, if you look at my join date, I'm not exactly a new member. I did take a hiatus, and when I returned recently, my post-count had gone to 0.

Maybe it's me, but I don't understand... I guess what I'm saying is, I don't get it. I'm a grown man, and I don't figure it's anybody else's business whether I keep a firearm by my bed, or loaded, leaning against the door, or in the closet, or in a safe.

You failed to consider perhaps the most obvious reason why I might be interested in knowing how others secured their long-guns next to the bed: I'd like to do the same, but I haven't found a practical solution. Perhaps I should have anticipated someone accusing me of holier-than-thou-ness, and reworded my question along the lines of, "For those who secure their long-guns by their bed, what method do you use?"

As an aside, for someone who doesn't "figure it's anyone else's business whether I keep a firearm by my bed, or loaded, leaning against the door, or in the closet, or in a safe" -- it sure seems like you thought it was everyone's business a few hours earlier. To wit:

I voted "yes," but it's not bedside, exactly. It's an M44 Mosin that I can grab on the way out of my bedroom. Directly at hand are a 9mm pistol and a 12 gauge shotgun.

The reason the rifle stays loaded is because there are feral dogs and coyote packs here. I keep the chamber empty. It's for canines, and that's all it's for.

Finally,

If it's a legit question and you're really not looking to play holier-than-thou, why not start a new thread instead of hijacking someone else's?

I'm a little lazy. It's not like my question was orthogonal to the topic at hand. I saw an opportunity to ask a handful of people who might have an answer to my question. Some-major-deity help me if I ever catch you raising a point that isn't 100% in line with the topic at hand. :cuss:

Cheers, no hard feelings, and all that! :)

Firepower! -- apologies if I took your thread too far off course.

you know before WWII the british may a carbine bolt action in 45 acp. For the life of me I can not remember what they called it, but that would make a nice bed side bolt action. More power then a 1911, but not so much that you have to worry about shooting thru the house.
