Been caught out and about by LEO without your permit?

Scenario

I believe jscott raised the scenarion of suspecting an individual. In either case it is a valid proposition and a simple statement.

In SC if someone see's your gun your illegal... With or without a permit. If you gun is concealed properly no one will know. In 65 years I've never been stopped by the Police while walking my dog. Also I would never walk or drive anywhere without identification, that's asking for trouble. Most Police wouldn't stop you or care, it wouldn't take a Rocket Scientist to see your walking your dog.

I've never seen someone pulled over while walking the dog.

Happened to my father.

He was out walking his dog in the middle of the night and he lives in a pretty rural area. I guess you could say a guy walking a German Shepard at 2 in the morning wearing camo sweats in that area is suspicious.

And of course he didn't have any ID with him either. The cop wasn't to pleased and my father informed her that he wasn't doing anything in Florida that required an ID. She went ballistic...To make a long store short, Dad copped an attitude which upset her even more, his German Shepard sensed the change in attitude and started getting protective of him, she called for backup and backup with more experience informed her Dad was right and didn't need ID to prove who he was because he was just walking his dog.

Two morals of this story:

1. If you're pulled over walking your dog with your gun and you forgot your permit chances are your additude is going to set the pace of the confrontation.

2. The 2nd worst thing you can do to a cop is tell them their wrong. The worst thing you can do is prove it.

I do a EDC check every single time I leave the house, even to get the mail. Phone, wallet, keys, knife, weapon. Same 5 items, same order, same check every time. Once the habit catches on, it reduced chances of this kind of thing happening.

I'm not saying I'd necessarily be suspected of anything. But if I'm contacted in any capacity by an officer on duty, I have to tell him I'm carrying. All I would have to do is be a witness to a traffic accident and this could have gone sideways on me. Clearly, it was a mistake and mistakes happen...I guess the moral is not to forget it again. I was just curious as to whether or not anybody had actually had to deal with it.

FLAvalanche, sorry I never thought that anyone would be walking their dog that late and dress that way. Today that could be very dangerous. I have politely disagreed with many Policemen and have asked them to call their Supv without any problems. And most of these disagreements had to do with gun and target shooting. Most of these problems was due to the Policeman being from other States and new to SC.

It might depend on whether or not you had other ID with you. Any reasonable officer would probably understand, especially if you were in your own neighborhood. But things are changing quickly. Look what goes on in our schools. If a kid is caught with a scout mess kit and it has a knife in it they suspend the child and send him/her to a reeducation camp. Parents might even lose custody. Zero tolerance for common sense. Here in NY you might be treated as a terrorist and your life might be changed forever. The dog you were walking may have just been a cover for what you really had on your mind, a full frontal armed assault of the local ice cream shop.

I have had several officers demand my concealed pistol license and each time I refused. Open carry requires no license or permit.

In Oregon, getting caught CCW without your CHL can lead to a misdemeanor conviction. The misdemeanor conviction puts you in "may revoke" territory, which I have not explored. Reacquiring a CHL means meeting the requirement of no misdemeanor convictions in the previous four years.

Don't leave home without it!
