Been thinking about a Walker.......

Mr A Walker, You sir have one of the finest finished Colts that Ive ever seen. I own Colts and I own Ubertis, The colt finish is superior. I shoot all of them and cant tell the difference. I dont own any of the 3d generation Colts. I probably would be divorced if I bought one

I agree with Snaggletooth... an excellent example of a third gen. Colt. They closely resemble the originals both in fit and finish (minus the "in-the-white finish of the Walker cylinders, that is). Uberti doesn't make the effort to properly break the corners or polish their guns because it would be too costly to do so; after all, the Italian clones are cheap because they are only minimally finished... Also, I have both 2nd and 3rd gen. Colts and, if anything, the third gen pistols may be finished a little finer than the 2nd gen. models. Good move stashing the thing away; I sometimes wish I'd done that with my Sig. Series Walker, though I gotta say I would miss shooting it...

I've been buying cheap BP revolvers (and the occasonal single shot) for about 35 years. Just utility shooters I use to put a little black powder smoke in the air... fun. :)

But when the 'Real Colt' BP guns came out I had to have one of those... and yes, I first thought to get a Walker. But they really are mighty big, heavy and clunky. And to me, that lever dropping down (just as it did when the piece was new 160 years ago) was a real deal-breaker. I can't think of anything more nightmarishly annoying. :p

So I got the product improved Walker... the 3rd Model Dragoon. That's the most refined and the best of those very early horse pistols, IMO. I love it. So did Rooster Cogburn.

Rooster Cogburn: Why, by God, girl, that's a Colt's Dragoon! You're no bigger than a corn nubbin, what're you doing with all this pistol?

I'll check the movie next time it comes on, but I think she's got a Walker, even though The Duke calls it a dragoon (still correct, I guess).

Just took the plunge and bought one from Dixie Gun works. They have Uberti Walkers on sale for $295 + $14.95 shipping. Those suckers are $399 at Cabelas!

The Uberti kits are also $225, but I finally took a realistic evaluation of the time and materials it would take to finish it to my liking.

Thanks for everyone's input.

The gun in the movie is indeed a Walker, presumably a repro, and converted to fire cartridges.

John Wayne does call it a Dragoon, but so did Elmer Keith, in his classic book, "Sixguns."

I believe these guns were originally called "holster pistols" in Colt's literature, referring to saddle holsters. Guns worn on the belt, like the soon-to-come "Navy" model, were called "belt pistols."

The terms "Dragoon," and "Navy" came later.
