The Walker Colt

I have the Uberti clone. It’s been to Georgia and back a few years ago. Loading lever doesn't drop, caps don’t jamb, it’s heavy and requires a two handed hold for this shooter and loaded up proper gets attention at the range. ;) It’s a fun gun.

My ASM Walker has made the Georgia trek and is in Mike's capable hands right now. It's being set up as both percussion and Howell conversion for .45LC handloads. I'll post some pix when I get it back. This is one that had a cylinder gap you could chuck a cat through when I first got it. I removed about .060 of that before sending it to Mike and he's doing the whole "Outlaw Mule" thing with action shield and a few other goodies like the loading lever catch spring mod so I won't be dropping the lever with each shot.

Shot mine today, the fellow I went with loaded it and managed to dry ball one chamber, no biggie, we all do it sooner or later. This was his first time with cap and ball revolvers so he got a real thrill when he pulled the trigger on that beast. Took the whole ride home to wipe the silly grin off his mug.

Please do post with pics when you get it back!

I too have a Urberti Clone. I have it on display. I don't shoot it since a need a pistol permit in NY if I have a pistol and what is needed to make it go bang. So I display it and don't keep the other products in the house.

I’ve often heard that ASM had spotty quality with some being excellent models and some not so much.

The Dragoons hold 50 grns with a ball. My NMA will fit about 40 grns max. My ROA holds about 45 grns (stock). Were I to have the chambers deepened by Clements it should hold about another 5 grns or what the Dragoon can hold. Odd since the cylinder is the same length as the NMA which clearly means these chambers must be tapered and/or tapered which I’ve read some are.

Initially I wanted a 2nd model Dragoon (love that trigger guard) but now I’d much rather have a Walker due to the history of it. And my ROA can basically do anything a Dragoon can if/when I get a ClassicBallistix cylinder. The loading lever is an easy fix.

While the difference in weigh (1/2#) between Dragoon and Walker, and the difference in barrel/cylinder length seem minuscule compared to other guns, there is a big difference (to me, anyway) in both balance and manageable control. I've not yet shot my Walker yet, but my initial assessment between the two is the Dragoon is the winner. The Walker is absolutely a two-handed gun. I've shot my 'goons one-handed and accuracy as such was nothing to crow about, but I wouldn't even attempt it with a Walker. So there's that...
Walker and the Whitneyville/1st/2nd Dragoons all use the same squareback trigger guard.

Well, uhm... kinda-sorta. The design is different, and the WH and the early 1st Model have V-type mainsprings and the late 1st Model and 2nd Model have "flat" mainsprings. The grip frame on the former is slightly longer and slimmer than the latter, and the TG bow is slanted more on the former.

These are both Uberti stock photos:

I like the Walker/WH style best for aesthetics but the flat mainspring shows evolution in design, simplicity, and cheaper to manufacture.

Jim

As a crazy aside, I’ve often wondered how an additional barrel reamed smooth would work with shot on rabbits and squirrels.

There’s also a fellow on this forum with an awesome carbine version. A full length stock with an 18” barrel? I’d take one for sure!
