I have picked up brass fired in a larger chamber. For example, finding 40 S&W fired in a 45 ACP is rare but not unknown. The forward part of the case beyond the web is expanded to the larger size. Back in the day a local shooter had a problem with an open bolt 9mm MAC. Turns out the 9mm had a 380 chamber. Wonder if measuring the non-bulged portion of the case would give you a clue on what happened? That round went off and was "fire formed" in a chamber of some sort.
