I am about to buy a Beretta M9...does anyone know how the new 90-Two compares? I haven't shot it. I don't even know if it is available in California yet. Any input would be appreciated.

Welcome to THR! From what I can see the differences are mainly cosmetic.

And the 90-two is the dumbest, most confusing name ever, IMO.:D

Either will be an excellent pistol. My 92 feels like the slide rolls on ball bearings. *drool*

I have a 92FS in 9mm, my father-in-law has a 90-two in .40.

Personally I like the feel and balance of the 92 better. I also like the look of the 92 a hell of a lot better. Just my $.02

I was able to pick up my NIB Beretta M9 last weekend (already have 500 rounds through her so far). I carry one in the Marines. I dragged one through Iraq.

If you load it with proper ammunition, the M9/92F makes a fine defensive weapon. You won't be disappointed. Excellent shooter!

I personally don't like the looks of the 90-Two.

Go with the M9, it'll last forever and is a classic.

The 90-Two has a smaller grip that will fit more hands. I think it has different backstraps.
The magazines are interchangable with the 92, with the 90-Two magazines being of higher capacity.
The 90-two also has the Shok-Buf system in it - very light recoil, fast recovery.

The 90-two feels sleeker in my hands, but I wish it didn't have that aweful rail. Makes a beautiful looking design fugly.

I've only fondled the 90-two, but I own 2 Italian 92's. IMO, as nice as the 90-two might be, all that plastic on it really takes away from the character of the original 92fs. IM(not so humble)O, go w/ the M9 ;)

Elite vs. M9

You guys are great...thanks for the response. Somebody was telling me I should try to find a good Elite model. He said the beefier slide and skeletonized hammer made it superior. I'm kind of new to all this...what is the value of both of those?

The Elites were more accurate. They have the Brigadier model's slide, but I don't think of that as important. The grips were rounded more, fitting medium hands better. The Elite II had a checkered backstrap, IIRC. I remember that I prefered the backstrap of the Elite I more.
I've seen the Elite I go for $75 more than the regular 92.

Get an M9/92FS. It's sickeningly accurate and has a classy look to it. The 90-Two, looks goobery and you have to tell people that you have a "Beretta nintey-TWO, no no, I mean the nintey-TWO, you know, the one meant to replace the Beretta 92, oh forget it..."

Main benefits of the Elite 2 were:

Novak fixed sights. Black post and notch were better for target shooting. Both front and rear sight can be replaced.
Reduced power hammer spring, which gave a DA pull around 4 pounds lighter.
G designation = decocker only. No chance of accidently putting the safety on during a jam clearance.
Radiused grip & checkering for a better hold.

Not so good ideas:

Front cocking serrations. Not a good idea. The exposed barrel can get hot.
Beveled mag well for smoother reloads.
Rubber base pads tended to break off and scatter the mags guts when dropped on hard surfaces or when rammed hard into the gun.

The Elite II was a good idea as an IPSC/IDPA gun, I liked mine, but I'm now the happy owner of a 92FS which I shoot as well, if not better than the Elite II.

I've got an Elite and an Elite II, the main differences are

Elites have the heavier Brigadier slide, helps with recoil and longevity.
Elites have Skeletonized Hammers, Elite is more skeletonized than Elite II, Elite II has the "d" hammer spring and a factory trigger job right out of the box.
Elites have dovetailed sights front and back, Elite has 3-dot, Elite II has Novak.
Elite have 4.7" Barrels instead of the 4.9. Elite II barrel is Target Crowned for better accuracy.
Elites are G models only, no manual saftey, just a decocker, Over on the BerettaForum we call em "G" thangs :)
Elite has vertically groved Front and Back straps
Elite II has Checkered Front and Back straps

Here's the kicker.

Elite IA
Vertec Frame, it has an Rail and Strait grip frame( similar to a 1911), instead of the standard Beretta rounded grip frame, everything else is the same as Elite II.

I purchased my Elite in .40cal for 600.00, LNIB, I got my Elite II in 9mm for 700.00 and it was NIB. If you search on GunBroker or any of the other sights, and even check out the classifieds on BerettaForum.net, you can usually find excellent condition examples for sale for around those prices.

And just for the record, I love both on these pistols, they never fail to operate as intended and they shoot like a dream. I keep them well maintained and feed them regularly to the tune of 250 rounds each per range trip. :D
And yeah, I've located a NIB Elite IA and I will be adding that to my collection as well.

Personally, if a Beretta feels great in your hands, you can't go wrong with any of the availible models, Even the new 90-two if you like it. When it comes:) right down to it, it's not about what myself or anyone else on any of these forums thinks, it about what you like and what your comfortable with, it's your money, time, and effort. :)
