I am a Ruger man and am looking for to add to my collection. I want to move outside the comfort zone and am looking at a Beretta or an XDM in a 45 acp. I own ruger 9mm, 357 and 40 cal. Anyone have some suggestions? I am a fairly new gun buyer.

Try the Beretta 96 A1 .40 with rail.
Awesome gun especially with Trijicon NS and a Surefire X300.
Shoots very tight groups. Win, win.

I don't have either, but have shot both in 9 and 40. It's a toss up to me. Both companies make nice guns. This would be one of those, "personal preference" things. {grip fit, location of controls,sights..etc}
That said, I prefer the ergonomics of the M&P pistols. Here again, it's a preference thing.

If it's a range gun, have you considered a 1911? STI Spartan comes to mind or a Mil-Spec Springer. Someone mentions .45acp, 1911 is the first thing I think of.
How's that for moving out of your comfort zone....:uhoh:

In 45, I'd say the XDM. I have an XDM in 9mm. The XD AND XDM 45 is so fun to shoot. I'm a Glock guy so that's why I got a 30 and 36, to go with my 23/27.

I have a Beretta Storm in 9mm. I'm just not as enamored by it. Mainly because I am not a fan of safeties and DA/SA shooting. The trigger is kind of mushy feeling.

I prefer the XD(M), but it comes down to what fits & feels good in your hand. I like to pick them up a few times with each hand to get a feel for them.

I would vote XD... My brother has one... and I have Beretta...

With that said...XD is a nice package!

Respectable firearm for acceptable price!

And I think one of the new XD s Single stacks will find its way to my home as well.

Has anyone seen pricing for the XD s yet?

I'm a glock/xd(m) fan my self but I also had a px4 storm in .40. I'm not a huge fan of the DA/SA set up but it wasn't a deal breaker. It was a soft recoiling accurate shooter. The full size beretta is also a good looking gun. The main issue I had with the beretta was that the polymer felt cheap and flimsy to me. It flexed really easy and it turned me off quickly.
The xdm to me is more accurate and more friendly as far as ergonomics are concered. The xdm is imho is the best looking poly on the market. Its also reliable as can be. I've never had an issue out of any of my xd(m) products. However I never had a problem with the storm either. I just couldn't get past the ugly green color I decided to buy and the cheap feel of it.

Go for the Beretta. The US military never stops ordering this beauty. Its a proof that this gun excels.

Fixed. ;)

That said, if you just want to diversify your collection, or pick up a sweet shooting range or HD gun, then the M9 is a great choice. It wouldn't be my first choice for concealed carry though.

In .45, I like the XDm. You get the choice of three sizes and a company that's been making .45s for... a century? And this is coming from a guy who likes Beretta over the XD... With .45, I switch teams.

The 3.8" XDm provides you with a concealable package with the capability of shooting 9 round flush mags or 13 round extended mags. 13 rounds of .45 in a sub-compact frame is just plain awesome. ;)

I have shot the heck out of .45 XDM. That's the route I would take. Several LEOs I know have switched to one for duty use. Then again, if you can shoot a Beretta you can shoot anything. :D
