I just acquired a Bersa UC 40 and took it to the range where it shot true and well, not a problem. However, while cleaning it I noticed some marks, like cuts, accross the frame rails, a couple on each rail, spaced an inch apart. The front cut is about 1.5 inches back from the front sight.

Any ideas what might have caused the marking? Only thought I have is that the front edges of the slide might have been rough initially and marked the rails as the casing ejected.

I had the same thing happen to mine when I owned it.

Look for a burr on the trailing edge on the slide that engages the rail

This has happened to others as well

It's a good gun, but this shouldn't happen

Dean1818, thanks for the input. I knew when I bought it it was not a Sig, and still like the Bersa, but I'll change my mind if the damage leaves lasting effects.

Mine got so bad that i returned it to bersa.

They had to replace the gun with a new one.

The slide was also very splotchy as well.

I liked the gun..... But it didnt knock my socks off.

So i sold the NIB replacement on gunbroker

For me it was too thick for comfortable CCW.

I also bought this one so my kids and wife could shoot.
The recoil was more than they liked.

I now CCW a M&P 45 compact.... Awesome gun

Update on the rail marks...I sanded the rails on the frame slightly and polished the tip of the slide rails - I could not sense any burrs but there was a bit of metal protuberance that was palpable if you tried hard to find it. Based on the foregoing advise, it seemed those protuberances were causing the marking. So, a little filing and that's that. I went to the range, popped 100 rounds, and voila- no markings - problem solved.
I love this Bersa UC 40. I was putting rounds in 2" circles at 15 feet and 3" at 25 feet. That's good given my eyesight and considerning I don't do any better with a Sig 220 elite.
What else I like? The levers (decocker, slide release) are larger than in the Sig 220 and pivot, which makes them easier to use. The trigger in double action feels lighter than the Sig 220 trigger, good for me, and in single action the trigger pull is quite short enough. However, the SRT trigger on the Sig can't be beat.
The trigger is gritty at the beginning, but after a couple hundred rounds and good lubricant, the grittiness is totally gone. All and all, a great pistol at an affordable price.
