+1 Dan Wesson Heritage

Started off looking at buying a new 1911. Looking for a USA made gun with top shelf components, nobody had as much quality packed in a sub $1200 gun.

$800-1200
For that money you could get one of the fancier RIA guns and a XT22 for cheap shooting, as well as a nice pile of ammunition, magazines, and holsters.

That's what I'd do, with that budget and nothing 1911-based in my armory.

Start looking for the Ruger SR1911 for apx $800.00 Bucks or less if you can find one. Buy it you will not regret it at all. I didn't. Love it more than my S& W 1911.As I would never carry any SS gun for CC & SD but after getting that Ruger in my hands, I changed my mind fast enough.

So far, I have been happy with my Colt Government model (80's series). A little over 1200 rounds and counting, no hiccups.

I would get a Colt, whichever you like best in your price range. The finishes are not the nicest, but they are very reliable and hold their value very well.

Springfield Range Officer hands down. If you look, you can find them for around $700.
That would actually be under your 800-1200 budget. Forged frame, adj. sight, decent barrel to slide fit and accurate. Great Springfield customer service.
