HZO2XX, Yes it is a laugh, but at the range i shoot at. (comp.) I'm able to shoot every round / hit paper where i want it, while other shooters with the "high dollar" pistols are "cussing" for one reason or another. It's even more reliable than my SA Mil-spec that i had "Loaded" out. I'm the one laughing 3 times a week! Remember looks aren't everything.

Even though the suggested retail price on this Model SW1911 DK Pistol is $1,446.00, I've seen it at one gun shop for under $1,200. I've had a chance to look this one over, and I do believe it is one of the best out of the box 1911s under $2,000.00 that I've seen of late. With the possible exception of adding a gold bead or TFO front sight, I can't think of another thing this one needs or that I would want to add or modify, it is THAT GOOD! skeeter_08

SIG/SAUER GSR they can be had for around 950 and are some of the better 1911's on the market today, all the problems they had when Chip Mccormack was helping with the build are gone now that he is gone.

I voted for Kimber because I have a Raptor II which is absolutely fantastic and with NO problems. However I am one who would like to have seen S&W on the list because I've shot several of their 1911s, which were very good, and their CS is second to none.

Kimbers are beautiful guns but around here, I find them way over priced.

Another vote for Colt. The stainless Government XSE is a fine pistol.

The newest Colts have Novak style sights, so you could always install night sights easily.

Voted for Charles Daly. I've had it for seven years comes fully equiped, very reliable and it's the least expensive. An excellent 1911 for the money.

Dan Wesson. They are great. Some models are harder to find than others, but they can be found.

Far and away the best one I've shot was a Taurus -- not factory-stock, though.

A guy at my club (Camp Perry competitor and NRA High Master) decided to take on a project: the lowest-cost true match-grade .45 pistol he could build.

For $700 for the pistol, parts, and some work, the thing is really quite a gun.

Dan Wesson, a few models come with night sights. I'm guessing you could get any of there models with the nights sights installed with a simple call to the customer service counter. Very good people to work with...

When it comes to a factory built 1911 Colt is my choice hands down. Springfield would be my second choice. That being said there are other good factory built 1911's out there.

If you are going to leave it in the truck console (and I know you did say leave it, i am just saying...) then I would not buy a 1911 of any type for that. Get some thing cheap so when it is stolen you won't be too upset.
For range use, what is your accuracy requirement for the gun to be interesting to you?

I absolutly can't stand the Billboard 1911's. Deos Sig really need their name cut in four foot high letters on the slide? I'd give them a chance if they didn't try so hard to make their guns look gaudy. Plastering your name all over something only works if I'm impressed by it. S&W deos it to.

Why can't it just say Sig 1911 on the slide in small GI style letters? Would I be cool if I tatooed "zerodefect" into my forehead with dayglow lettering?

I use to think Colt But my Dan Wesson has them beat Bobtail and night sights no MIM accurate and well finished. I still like my Colts but DW a Better all around pistol.

If it were under $1000.00 poll i would say SW1911, these are great for the money,even a Sig gsr is real good for the money, but since the poll is at @1200. i have to go with Dan wesson, although my Valor was 1400 new, but man i tell you tough question....nah DW rocks.

I wasn't intending to fan flames, CWL. I should have clarified the background more than I had. I grew up with 1911s as "truck" guns, or as a farm pistol. I have several that I've inherited, some I've picked up dirt cheap. I grew up with them all as "beater" guns. Good to do chores with, plinking, self defense, what have you. Nothing fancy, just toss one in the truck and go.

I just never learned to worship them on an altar. Good solid pistols, heavy to carry, but can always be counted on. I still feel that way, as I do about S&W revolvers, too. I just never got into paying several thousand dollars for what I had always had, I guess.

I was strictly taught that firearms are tools to be used and maintained carefully, but still a tool to be used. 1911s were the epitome of that for me, and I guess it has just stuck in my craw over the past 20 years how the prices of a solid workhorse have skyrocketed.
