Best 1911 for under $1500? TRP?

Besides STI and Dan Wesson I would also consider a Colt Gold Cup in that price range as a decent buy.

There are a number of top of the line 1911's out there. Dan Wesson has been mentioned as well as STI, Kimber, Sig Sauer, Colt and the list just keeps going.

I have 3, a Sig, Kimber and Colt. All three are great guns and reliable.

Your choice

I have a Black Duty Coat DW Valor and an STI Trojan 9mm, and can recommend either of these without reservation.

Dan Wesson and STI are really head-and-shoulders above the others in component quality (with DW comfortably at the top). Can't beat a Colt Gold Cup for nostalgia and classic looks, though.

Dan Wesson, Springfield TRP, or Colt. After a couple of really nasty experiences with Kimber, I'll never have another nor will I recommend them after I get rid of my remaining Kimbers.

Sig is a good choice at the lower end of the range.
Les Baer is a good choice at the higher end of the range.

Valor all the way. You can get often get blem guns for under $1400 OTD. NIB can be done for just under $1500 but it will take some work and patience. A lot will depend on shipping cost and what you pay for transfers.

DWs seem to be inching up in price on GB. IMHO YMMV

I'd lean towards something from Dan Wesson as being the best production 1911.

Normally I don't worry to much about looks when it comes to guns. With 1911s I thinks looks are at least some of the appeal for a lot of people. I like that Dan Wesson avoids giant roll marks on the slide. Something that is apparently unresitable to so many other makers.

Wow!

Dan Wesson Valor, hands down!

Is this a well kept secret, considered the best production 1911?

OP, if you replace the two-piece full-length guide rod in the TRP with a GI guide rod and recoil spring plug (which I suspect many of us TRP owners do, refer to the 1911forum), the pistol will not require the little tool for disassembly.

Although I think the DW is a great production 1911, I haven't seen it for under $1500 -- upwards of 1800 in my neck of the woods -- for some time. If that's one's budget threshold, the TRP is the choice.

Dan Wesson Heritage will easily come in under $1500. Maybe under $1200 if you look! Everything you need and nothing you don't.

Ok, nice -- I've spent all of my time shooting and learning about polymer guns, trying to educate myself here -- thanks!

If I were buying another $1500 1911 (my wife says I can't, 6 is enough.. bah) it'd be either an STI or Dan Wesson.

Pretty much a coin toss for me there.

That said, my current favorite 1911 is a $600 Ruger SR1911 CMD.

the gun requires tools for disassembly *not interested

Not a single 1911 requires a tool to disassemble. I dont care what guide rod is in it. The gun will come apart pulling the slide stop out.

Ruger! And at less than half of your $1500. High end 1911's can be a real rip off. I've had some that were worth the money, but have also had some that were not as good as production guns.
