Best 1911 for under $1500? TRP?

I have had several Dan Wesson guns. One needed parts replacements, extractor had no tension, slide stop locked open prematurely, and the list goes on. The others were great guns. I am not particularly impressed with the last few STI single stacks that I have run across. Fit, finish, reliability. Obviously, eveyone can make a lemon. For $1500.00, I would cool my jets and add a couple of hundred bucks to the gun kitty, then get a Les Baer. FWIW, the last 1911 I bought was a Colt. Seems like their QC has improved.

I just picked up a Les Baer Custom Carry for $1500, as new condition. Have had 3 DW, was not impressed. One of them, I could not keep the front site on it.

TRP without a doubt.....awesome finish, tight, VERY accurate and reliable. They have an aggressive grip that I like and the finish is really tough. I've owned a couple Dan Wesson 1911's just don't really prefer them. I haven't tried an STI though.

TRP has that gay "tactical" roll mark. Too much MIM for the price.

At $1500, no debate, nothing close... DW Valor hands-down!!
If you want to spend less, get the DW Heritage (about $1100) has the 'two-tone' bead-blast/brushed ss finish, different sights, and alittle less hand-fittting/polishing... but still a great pistola for $1100.

The sharp 20 LPI grip is what I didn't like about my TRP . That was the first gun that I bought without holding before buying . I ended up selling it unfired , lesson learned .

I wish DW still made the Pointman 7 . I would get one to go with my Pointman 9 since I sold the TRP. They are a little nicer finished than the Heritage .

In your price range the Heritage is what I would get .

never really heard anything bad about the TRP or complaints on the 1911 forums.

I bought my DW Valor used for considerably less than what a new one goes for.

IMHO, I really think the STI Trojan is the best 1911 for the money, my 9mm is just a lot of fun to take to shoot at the range.

DW Valor. I paid $1650 local, but they are cheaper online:

I like the ParaOrdnance GI Expert and any of the 1911 Rugers. The Remington R1 has also gotten a lot of good press. All are well under $1,500.00.

I have had very good luck with my TRP, and before that I had a sig 1911 that ran very well.

Only sold the SiG because I needed to buy a new scope, otherwise I would still have it.

I have about 1500 rounds through my Springfield MC Operator.
Runs great. I only have 250 rounds through my Dan Wesson. It's had a few teething problems but it's much tighter and has better attention to detail than the Springfield.
Once I have the DW broken in, ill carry it. The MC Operator is on nightstand duty with a streetlight. The MC was cheaper than a railed TRP and doesn't have that weird rear sight.

i really like my Sig Sauer 1911's,

I have 3 of em and didnt pay over $1000 for any of them.

Havent really had other 1911's.

I stopped looking and shopping after my first one.

They are really, really good

be safe

Always interesting the opinions that come out regarding the cosmetics on whatever firearms is up for discussion ... not so interesting the immature use of "gay" as a pejorative.

As far as the amount of MIM in a TRP, I suspect most TRP owners either aren't concerned or know how to rectify the situation if they see it as an issue.

And then there's the folks who say stuff such as "at 1500, no debate" and "hands-down" yet don't support their hyperbole with any experience as far as owning or shooting the pistol they're attempting to dismiss.

At 1500 dollars, there IS debate. Also, since those of us who've owned and shot multiple samples of several makes and models of 1911 know, it's not so easy as "hands down." While I believe that Dan Wesson makes a great production 1911, its existence doesn't render the pistol in question -- the TRP -- unworthy.

Take a visit to the 1911 forum, and you'll find many, many satisfied TRP owners ... and a lot of satisfied DW owners as well.

Good to have choices in the 1911 arena now, but there's no reason to tear down someone else's choice simply to hold your personal choice up as "the best."

I have not shot or handled a DW 1911. Lots of positive comments regarding that brand. I am interested in why. From those that have experience with other mid price 1911's. Not just fan boy comments, but reliability, accuracy comparisons. I could care less about all the cosmetic opinions. Thanks in advance.

I'll admit my sample size of Dan Wesson 1911s I've shot is small -- I've fired only three of them, a CBOB and two Valors, all of them owned by one friend. The fit and finish is excellent; he relates they've all been 100% reliable and each one struck me as having above average accuracy.

Now, I've had two TRPs, one stainless, one blued.

This particular TRP (with the *** Tactical rollmark) is the most accurate production 1911 I have ever shot in forty years of shooting 1911s. And I will certainly stack its fit and finish against any Dan Wesson.

Mine:
-100% reliable. Never failed. Federal ammo, Blazer ammo, Wilson and Checkmate mags.
-Accurate groups. As accurate as Les Baer easy. But, the Heinie sights shoot low. So i removed them.
-All good parts. Nothing cheap.

Just needs heavy lube. No CLP or Rem oil here.

Handle one, you can feel it right away. Worst part on the gun is an Ed Brown part. I like to fit the thumb safety to my hand and sensitize the grip safety.

I handled around 9 DW's the other day when I went to pick up some more magazines.
I only went to get the mags but had to see my crack dealers (LGS) new stock.

Fit and finish were good on all VBOB-Valor-Specialists (SS and Duracoat)
problem was a pretty big variation from gun to gun in the trigger. some where flat out mushy. If I had to walk out of the door right then with a gun in that price range it would of been a TRP Operator (better trigger on the two I looked at)

Course in the end, I was really only seriously considering two guns that were 2-3x that price.:uhoh:
