Montana, we allow pretty much anything here. If it goes bang, come to Montana for no wardens or cops up your ass with it. And .243 is off of the table for me because of the fact the hole closes after entry. Will look into some of those other rounds
Savage offers ALL of them afforadbly.

My stock is synthetic. Do you know where to find a better stock?
Boyd's can get you one, but you may have to get some sandpaper out to make it fit properly. Honestly, by the time you get the weights and a stock, you're close to the price of your new rifle. That's something you might think about too. Savage wood stocks for a long action aren't hard to find, search model 111 or 116 or whichever wood stock replacement/custom savage.

Only a wood stock? Mine is synthetic

Ok, thanks
The mercury weights set in holes that you bore out and then plug. I think you should be able to fit 2 in the butt and 2 in the forend if I remember correctly(the latter helps the balance) but be careful that you get the rifle ones and not the 12GA ones.

The synthetic stocks do kind of beat you up if you don't hold on tight enough, but Savage sells wood stocks for,i believe, all of there actions and models. At least the floorplate mags for sure. Make sure you order for a long action though. MPI makes awesome stocks, so does McMillan, but there not cheap.
Houge makes rubber overmolded stocks that are a bit heavier than the standard synthetic.

Try this out. Fill a sandwich sized ziploc bag with sand and put it in the void under your stock's buttplate. It should add some weight, then go shoot it. If it helps enough, epoxy it in there. If it still kicks too much try some lead fishing sinkers in the stock. It can't hurt, and you may save yourself some $$...

For replacement stocks though GOOGLE is your friend. My $0.02

Unless you are just a tiny guy, or especially sensitive to recoil, there aren't many scoped 7mm-08 rigs that are going to just rattle your teeth. My daughter-in-law weighs 110 pounds and hunts with a Ruger M77 Compact in that caliber, she is death warmed over with that thing.

Thanks for the ideas!

Another trick to add weight and reduce recoil on those savage synthetic stocks, especially if its an old square one, is to epoxy lead shot into the forend and fill the butt with foam or some other filler than do the same to the butt, to make the rifle ballance properly. top that with a squishy pad and recoil is heavily minimized.....youll also have a 10-12lb gun :/

Ive done that on a couple rifles now, including a square stocked savage 7mm (then 300). None of them stayed like that tho i got tired of carrying them up and down Maunakea.

Alot of good suggestions already posted about other options.

Also something to consider, make sure its not the blast making you flinch. Friend of mine shoots with plugs in when were hunting because the sound makes him jump. He cant hit crap without them but i dont think ive ever seen him miss with. Also sucks waiting for him to put them in before firing, wish hed pony up for some electronics.....

Surefire dude, surefire! Blast filtering, non electronic, shoot all day with em open and if you want to close em, takes two seconds.

"And .243 is off the table for me because of the fact the hole closes after entry."

And you have witnessed this?

So you are purchasing an AK-47 and a 7mm-08?

Since your 30-06 recoils too much are you selling it to fund your AK and 7mm-08 purchase? What make and model 30-06 do you have?

Ill second the ruger american and the savage axis. I have 2 RAR, 1 in .308, 1 in .243. Also have the savage axis in 30-06. All with the synthetic stock. The savage will rattle your teeth. All of those guns were under $400 and all shoot well under 1 MOA at 200 yards. The fit and finish is MUCH better on the RAR. A decent boyds stock with a recoil pad should tame down recoil if the 7-08 is too harsh for you. Boyds stocks only add about 150 to the cost.
My .243 RAR shoots as accurately as many custom bolt guns costing 5 times what the RAR costs.

hed forget to shut them once and that would be it. I keep thinking about buying him the electronic ones, but i already bought him a dog shocker, so hell have to wait.

FWIW: I've tagged some two-dozen bucks with my .243. All were one-shot bang/whop/flop with no tracking.

Granted, I was picky about the shots and worked at precise aiming. And, I limited the range at which I was fairly certain of an exact hit; generally, inside of 200 yards--which in no way is any sort of absolute limit.

No no no, even with them open, they filter out the blast! I like em for hunting cuz you can whisper to your buddies and not go deaf when the .270 blasts off.

ahhh ok thats cool, Ill look into them i might want a set too. Only issues i have with my stw (besides carry weight, did the lead stock fill), is the muzzle blast and how much crap it tosses into the air when firing over dry ground.

I can't speak to ALL of the models but my ep3 works great! A LOT less blast induced flinching by everyone with them in!

I think you shood start by choosing what ammo and bullets you want to shoot.

Then make sure the rifle has the appropriate barrel and twist for that ammo / bullet.

The 7mm-08 gives huge versatility but rifle and ammo makers are not taking advantage of that.

I would also stay away from feather like rifles specially at a premium.
The difference is weight is not enough to justify difference in price and perfectly portable rifles.

Also the round can use some extra weight or a heavier load might give more recoil than desired.
It is a powerful round.

I think the savage with accustock is hard to beat in terms of value out fo the box. The question
is do they have the 7mm barrel and twist you want? same thing with other brands and models.

The 10FCP SR has to be the best value right now but the problem it is not made in 7mm/08 although
easy to re-barrel wiht a barrel wrench and a no-go gauge. One could get $200 for that barre unfired.

Not the perfect stock but something one would not have to touch other than the caliber in this case.
I wish savage would provide this one in 22 inches with a 8" twist.

One could go with a XP but I think the action + accustock has more value to offer than the factory barrel + nikon scope...

In terms of a rem 700 action the Bergara B14 is the best value around but the problem they have not released a 7mm/08 and
that one would be more expensive to rebarrel.

For a classic in 7mm the winchester M70 is beautiful but the same issue limited by the 9.5 twist.

I have only seen a just released ruger american with 8 twist but not sure how well they work...

IMO, wiht the slow yet steady evolution of premium ammunition one might take advantage of at least a 9 twist.

but again it all depends on goals and expectations.

Somebody mentioned it earlier, so I'll just add a+1 to that in saying I'd look into the Tikka T3.

Personally I'd go for either a .243, a .260 or a 6.5 Swede rather than the 7mm-08 since it sounds like you're kind of reaching and it isn't a lock.

I'll amend my statement above. The Ruger American is one damn fine rifle for the $. But I still like Savage.
