Hi Guys:

What are the best aftermarket irong sights for a FAL??? I am thinking of getting a FAL but everyone says that the sights are the worse thing about the gun. Are there any great iron sights that you can co-witness with a Ecotech or Aimpoint red dot???

All opinions welcomed!!

Thank you!! :)

Shazam,

There are several experiments underway to relocate the rear site to a modified dust cover, instead of the lower receiver. Other folks are drilling out the aperature and installing smaller peep sights. The FAL's stock sights aren't the best, but they're reliable, and get you on target.

You'll hear it said a lot, but it is a truism: The FAL is a battle rifle, but you can make center of mass hits with them out to 600 meters, and sometimes better than that with the right rifle/ammo combo.

Best,
John Bear Ross

Edited because it's early in the morning, and I don't always know what I'm talking about :D

I feel the only thing wrong with FAL rear sights are that they are not protected from knocking around and are not windage adjustable.
The rear sight on the Paratrooper models fix that at the trade off of only 2 elevation settings, and still no windage.
I like my DSA windage adjustable Para rear sight with flip M-16 A-1 apertures (with 2 same size apertures, one marked "L", it zeros at ~200 and 400 meters).
I do not like optics on a MBR, and find mounting any sighting device on a FAL topcover to be kind of stupid (IMHO).

The rear sight on a FAL is a bit close to the eye, especially if you are used to shooting US military rifles with their rear peep position.

That said, the FAL sights are pretty good as is. Trying to replace them with something on the dust cover will probably result in a rear sight that, while being at a more optimum position from the eye, will result in a moving zero, as the dust cover is never totally rigid on the FAL receiver.

I say try the sights as is, before you start messing with sucess.

Look into the protected rear sight called the "Holland" style (I believe).

It appears to be very durable.

Topcover sights usually aren't the hot set-up, and was a major weakness in an otherwise fairly excellent Galil rifle.

If you want to mount something on the dust cover, get the DSA mount. I've got one and it's rock solid.

Um, actually FAL rear sights are windage adjustable.
Mine is windage adjustable without a screwdriver. The stock one is not ment to be adjusted after being sighted in.

Brownells started carrying a base that takes a Williams WGRS Sight. It installs in the existing receiver slot.

That's promising...a much better set up than the jerry-rigged receiver sights I've seen. I'm not familiar though with how this Williams sight works. Is it "finger" adjustable? I don't see any obvious adjustment...does it only loosen with a screwdriver or hex wrench?

Why can't anyone make a good A2 style sight? Seems like they could sell a scad of them.

imkris,
The screws have to be loosened with a screwdriver to adjust. If you want a AR-15 A2 type sight I think DSA has one that is windage adjustable, it's made by someone else but it is a para type with the A2 windage knob and the flip rear.

That Williams sight looks good BUT in the real world it has proven very weak in getting the peep knocked out of the aluminum held by TINY gib lock screws - think jewlers screw driver. ;)
