30-30,30-30,30-30, Power for anything you can hit in the vital area, range 300 yds if you know how to shoot. Reliable, available, comfortable. What's not to like.:what:

Can you please name for me 6 or 7 bolt actions chambered in that round? Not that it makes much difference as the rifle selection isn't the criteria here, I was just wondering?

I think it depends on the upper end of what you might hunt with it. If deer then I think the .260 Rem is the most versatile cartridge out there and unlike the 6.5 Swede, available in shorter action rifles. I find it odd that maybe the best two cartridges in the 308 family, the 260 and the 358, are the least popular.

There isn't one, because it depends on the use and such. But an excellent case can be made for both .270 win and .30-06 spgfld, due primarily to their relative inexpensiveness in factory ammo, and superb versatility. 6.5x55, .280 rem, 7x57 mauser, and a few others (just as versatile) would also be be up there, but for the ammo expense factor. IF ONLY ONE, then .270 win would be my pick, if you're talking hunting all game on the North and South American continents.

This could be construed a bit from a subjective standpoint... when you say "best all around" do you mean from a ballistics or availability standpoint? Ballistics, the 7 mm's (7x57, 7mm-08, and .280 Rem)generally outperform their .30 cal counterparts... from an availability perspective, the .30 (30-30, .308, 30-06) cal stuff is more widely available in more places...

So, now that we have the monkey wrench tossed in... :neener:

I don't know about 6 or 7, but I know there are at least 3... Ithaca, Savage and Remington made them in 30-30... not sure if there are any currently produced...

A 6.5 x 55mm Swede, 7x57mm Mauser or 308 Winchester may be very well and good for a lone rifle in some (many) places. But there are places in the world where they would not be enough for all situations.

If you are going for world wide, 375 H&H gets my vote.

i don't even have one, but it HAS to be the 30-06! it is THE cartridge that everyting else is measured against. UNLESS your talking africa, then .375 H&H. or a big nitro express.

I'll go with the crowd here and say 30'06. If I had to chose only one bolt rifle to own for the rest of my life and use for all my shooting needs I think it is the best all rounder.

I have the antlers of nice 6x6 elk tha was shot by a .270 and it dropped right where it was standing. If I drew for bison or a moose though I would want something bigger.

A .243, 30/30, etc just do not have enough punch for bigger game. A good 30'06 can reach out there and hit small targets at long distances as well. Its over kill, but it could take yotes, jackrabbits and prarrie dogs easily as well.

A good 30'06 can do a passable job at most shooting tasks one would ask of a bolt gun.

I would have to vote for the .308 due to the short case, trajectory and bullet choice. That being said, I do not own an .308 but two 30-06s. I think the 30-06 is all that I need or want in a rifle/round and will do what most people want from a rifle. However, perceived recoil, rifle weight and bullet length of the 30-06 case must be considered. JMHO
