Best AR-15 Carbine stock

I am in the market for an AR carbine stock and was wondering what the best one out there is. Had been looking at DPMS, but someone mentioned they rattle. I see a ton of cheaper no name stock out there. I am also looking at busmaster and Tapco.

Tapco seems to be a good price and some of there work seems pretty good.

Any help with this would be greatly appreiated

All carbine or M4 collapsibles have some rattle to them. There is less rattle on the quality ones like Colt, RRA and Bushmaster. They seem to be molded thicker and have a closer fit to the extension. Most of them source from the same fabs and OEMs, but some cheaper no-name stuff is slightly inferior.

If you want a stock that doesn't rattle, but is adjustable - you'll have to look at the aftermarket stuff like VLTOR and MAGPUL and those types. Expect to pay at least $120 for the most basic entry level stock in this category. These offer better cheek welds and are more solid with no rattle. They have more adjustment range, so you can fine tune to the exact LOP that you need.

I use the standard M4 stock, it doesn't rattle much, if any to make any difference or to make noise and feels solid enough. I don't see the value in spending $120-$250 on a high end stock. It isn't going to make me hit the target any better, nor is it going to have more stealth. No practical advantage. Maybe if I had to carry and use the AR on a daily basis as part of my job, then I might consider one of those for the extra comfort.


If you do settle on an M4 stock, just get one with an H-buffer. It will cost $15 more, but is better for carbine length gas systems.

My Bushmaster 4 position rattled like crazy and it drove me nuts. That is, until I installed 2 small strips of electrical tape on top of the stock tube. Now, no more rattle and it is a bit tighter fit too.

Forgot to add, whatever M4 or Carbine stock you get, repeated collapsing and extension will, over time, make ALL standard stocks rattle more as they wear down.

That's another advantage to the high-end stocks,

Original A1. $5-10 at gunshows.

The adjustables rattle, have a poor cheek weld, and lots of hooks and angles to catch on things. If you're not wearing body armor and climbing in and out of tank hatches, the A1 is all you need. Use the money saved on a nice optic or better barrel.

My LMT stock dosnt rattle, at all. Zero rattle. Uses the right size tube too.

Yo beat me to it; I keep an A1 stock on my 16" AR carbine.

If you're set on an adjustable, I'd get a VLTOR if I were going adjustable. I think I've seen them on eBay and GunBroker for $129 with buffer/spring and all.

You might want to do a THR search on the Cavalry Arms (CAA) C2 Telestock. Goes for $69 (with all internal parts and receiver extension) on the auction websites, and has gotten some good press on THR.

How would an ACE skeleton stock stack up against the A1 stock for weight and durability?

The ACE SOCOM is really strong,minedoesn't rattle and I love the 'meat hammer' However, I was told the foam deteriorates and jams the charging handle so I wrapped it with OD 100mph tape.Also heard the detents wear with alot of in and out action but mine stays at 12" pretty much. The Sully stock is a nice 12"er and cheap. The A-1 stock is a little longer and very cheap.
